Hi i am a British national, I have a 60 day visa and it's running out next week. i was wondering what the easiest thing to do is, because i only need to extend it for another 20 days before i leave. i'm based around chiang mai, is it possible to extend the visa in an office there? the other option is to go to malaysia (KL) for a few days, can i get a new visa issued on arrival back in Thailand or do i have to apply for it at the embassy there?

thanks

If you have a 60 day tourist visa (from a consulate outside Thailand) you can get a 30 day extension for 1900 Baht by visiting your local immigration.

Take your flight tickets, there have been a couple of posts indicating the certain offices are being awkward about extending.

Your flight tickets should help 'persuade' then but DO NOT present them unless asked for or they threaten only to give you a short extension.

You've got basically three options:

1) extend your Tourist Visa by 30 days at Chiang Mai Immigration; cost: 1,900 baht; same day

2) do a border trip to the Burmese or Laos border; cost: transport plus visa/other costs (Burma border: about 500 baht?, Laos visa: about 1,500 baht?); same day

3) travel to KL to get a new Tourist Visa good for 60 days; cost: transport plus 1,100 baht visa fee; about three days needed

Easiest and cheapest option is #1.

My understanding is that you can get a 30 day extension at any Thai Immigration office for around 1900THB. If there's one in Chiang Mai (I believe there is) they should be no exception, unless of course they're feeling uncooperative the day you go. There's a form you have to fill out, but that, the line up, and the cash should be all there is to it.

I'm not sure if you can leave upon the expiry of your visa and return on a 30 day free transit stamp. I imagine you could if you've not got three already in the past six months, but I'm not 100% sure.
