Some of my lady friends have been using this term "man kieow" with me for years but I have never got a satisfactory explanation from them as to what it means. They usually use it when we get together to spend some time together after not seeing each other for a while. Usually, it is uttered in a playful manner either before or right after we have renewed our friendship by getting to "know" each other again :o

Can anyone provide a translation of this term for me?

My source tells me it literally means very appetizing or in the modern idiom perhaps toothsome would apply, Thais use it with young children who they find loveable and the urge to touch iresistable like pinching an arm or cheek. difficult to translate but since you have seen it in action a translation is superfluous, surely the best way to learn a language.

OK I get what this phrase means now. Would it be appropriate for a man to say it in the situation I described, i.e., between a couple in a relationship, or is it more a phrase used exclusively by women in relationship to their male companions?

From the way it was explained to me it was more, old grannies to kids, your experience was girlfriend to you, if you 'get it' try it, if it pleases or amuses that adds another valid useage; non native speaker to Thai girlfriend doesn't it?

I asked a Thai about this a while back. Apparently it can be used by male to female in a relationship too.

If you've seen the recent thai movie 'Koo rad' it is said in there "talking to a small child in a 'your so cute i want to eat you' sort of manner", with the famous thai actor 'mum' hilarious film. Me and the GF went to see it and she says it all the time now.
