Okay, I am curious if one could, being farang and all, get a PHD from CU? Also, what are the odds of a farang teaching history at CU? Do Thai Universities have a TA system in place or something close? Thanks all. If you know of any other Univeristies please let me know, I only know of CU.

I do not know if you can get a doctorate in history from Chula....but I think it would be almost impossible to teach history unless you are totally fluent in Thai. See the section on "Corrupt to the Core" that I started. In my view, Thailand's system of education is almost the worst on the planet....probably close to Nigeria on a scale of 1-10. I is corrupt to the core......avoid it.

If you are serious, get a doctorate at one of Singapore's universities or even at a top univ. in Malaysia......better still.....get it in Australia. My guess is that there are way too many people with doctoral degrees in history already......I would think the market is flooded.

Why not skip it and get a degree in logistics and study history on the side.........just a suggestion.

I think very difficult to get into one of Singapore's government universities. I believe only 20% of Singaporean bachelor degree applicants are accepted to study at places such as SMU and NUS. Alternatives offered by private companies that allow British, Australian and USA universities to run degree programmes there are limited to bachelor and masters only as far as I know.

Do not know about SMU - I reckon you get in there for say an MBA if you have the required Bachelor plus the cash ;-)

As for Doctorate's - I have seen a few about in Singapore from oversea's Uni's from PHd's and DBA's from aussie to PHd in Education from Durham UK

Thaibebop, I'm currently about halfway through an MA in Thai Studies at Chula. Once I complete that course, I'll sign up for a PhD in Thai Studies. Of course, the chosen topic could be specifically concerned with Thai history.

On the MA course, there are Chula lecturers (both Thai and non-Thai) and visiting lecturers (Thai and non-Thai). All courses are taught in English. Chula has several higher degree international courses, such as the MA in South-East Asian Studies.

I wonder if Chula would hire a professor who got their Phd in Thailand. Seems most universities here like to see graduate degrees from overeas.

It would seem that they have to. If they don't, then would it not prove their own degrees are not worth the paper they are printed on?

Excellent news! Thank you! What are your plans after you get your PHD if you don't mind me asking?

That seems to be a common practice just extended out of the country. In Amercia colleges don't hire people who get degrees from them. It's for the same reason, social validity.

After I get my PhD?? (some 4/5 years from now...). Absolutely no idea! I only study for self-satisfaction etc, don't need the qualifications for work. Maybe I will become a goodwill ambassador for Thailand :o
