a credit to her parents and the store.

hope she gets a generous reward from the turk.

She only got 3000 baht :o

and since when is a reward obligatory for simply doing the right thing?

Exactly. About 15 years ago I found $5000 in an unmarked envelope where I was working and was offered a $100 reward by the owner. I turned it down precisely because getting a reward for doing the right thing didn't seem, well, right. The offer was enough.

I could use that $100 today though. :D

in some countries rewards between 5 and 10% are obligatory by law and i think it would have been the right thing to do and reward the honest girl with 10k.

edited for addendum:

in my home country Germany the obligatory rewards regulated by law are:

10% for value up to €UR 2,000

5% for value exceeding €UR 2,000

German companies doing business internationally also are allowed to budget for bribing local officials aren't they? At least they were back in the mid-90's. Odd ethics in Germany.

I do hope this girl is being flooded with thankful gifts from those who recognize her selflessness. If I were there, I certainly couldn't resist dropping by a $20. (So yes, those who would glom on; give me a way and I will) I hope it catches on. The gift of having your faith in humanity restored is precious and rare. Now, I'm done preaching. Please don't shred me. :o
