Hi

We using Bangkok has a hopping off point for our SE Asia trip. My BF travels on an Indian passport - on our first entry we will be there a week so he will get visa on arrival 1,000 baht I believe.

However second time we are only in BKK a few hours to get connecting flight to Jakarta. However as we are changing airlines we have to clear immigration before checking-in with next flight. Will immigration allow him through without a visa if he is not leaving the airport? Seems crazy to have to pay another 1,000 baht for a few hours spent in the airport.

Third time we are there for three days, would the transit visa be a better option?

Getting different info from different Thai embassy websites !

Are you sure you have to clear immigration? In the 45 years that I flew never had to do that - just checked baggage through to destination at origin and proceeded to transit lounge at transit point. Might have to go through security check but not immigration. But have things changed in the new 'check your shoes' era?

Visa on arrival should be fine - that is what it is designed for and you will not need more than the 15 days it allows.

Changing from Bangkok Airways onto AirAsia. AirAsia is point to point airline so won't even handle transits between their own flights.

I think you need transit visa UNLESS you are one of nationals with visa on arrival program applicable.

If I remember correctly, there was a case like this - Tiger airline, not Air Asia though -, and the lady was kicked out back to origin country with red stamp in the passport.

So you need transit visa.

I have seen several Budget Airlines have a stated Policy

they will not accept Checked in Baggage for a Destination

beyond their arrival point.

To get round this and to avoid the need of a Visa

one could try to avoid Checked in Luggage

You might have to pay a Premium for extra Hand Luggage

and I have seen Budget Airlines providing for this

The rates I saw were high - but might be the Cheaper

choice in the Long Run - it would avoid the need for a Visa and

going out and back thru Immigration.

If you decide to go for the VOA for the Indian Passport holder -

An Indian National who does this regularly told me that while the

VOA is straight firward if you have your Correct documentation (and photo).

You can save time by obtaining and Completing in advance

an application Form TM.88

But that it can usually take an hour to obtain a VOA - due to the Queue.

If your connecting time is short this should be borne in mind.

Having obtained your VOA - you then have to queue for immigration

and then find the Baggage Carousel - there are 20 or so >

before finding your check in Desk.

The Transit Lounge will be MUCH easier -

Hope this helps

I just re-read your OP

Bht 1,000 for VOA is correct

"Getting different info from different Thai embassy websites !" is a fact of life !

What Airline will you use whe flying into Bangkok the second time

& what Airline are you flying on to Jakarta?

Are you sure that the first Airline will not accept your Checked Baggage

direct to Jakarta? If it will then going straight to the Transit Lounge

- which does NOT require any Visa - would be the normal way to travel.

Sorry - I do not have knowledge of Transit Visas

It's not just the luggage that needs to be checked in all the way through, we need to be too. I doubt Bangkok airways will issue boarding cards for AirAsia.

I understand that to obtain a transit visa you need to already have a visa for the country you are traveling on to which we won't have.

So unless anyone knows of any other way? Luckily we have 5 hours between connections if the only option is to queue for tourist VOA.

If the Luggage is not a Problem - by confining yourself to Hand Luggage then ...

You get your Air Asia Boarding Card in the Bangkok Airport Transit Lounge - which is Airside

You do not pass thru Immigration

You do not need a Transit Visa You do not need ANY Thailand Visa

You asked if anyone knows another way ...

If you really do have to Check in your Luggage to Bangkok Airways

Then to avoid the need for a VOA for the Indian Passport holder

and in case the Bangkok Airways flight is delayed for some reason

then I suggest

You both go to the Transfer Lounge

Find the Air Asia Transfer Desk

Ask if THEY can retreive your Checked in Luggage for you

If they Cannot - then your B/f can get his Boarding Card there

and proceed to the Departure Gate

While you go to Immigration - get your 30 day Visa Exempt Stamp

(I assume from what you wrote you qualify ??? USA or European Country on List?)

Go claim your Checked in Luggage

and proceed to the Air Asia Check in Desk to get your Boarding Card

and then back in thru Immigration to meet up with your B/F at the Departure Gate

If you have an e-ticket with both your names on it

I would imagine that Air Asia would be able to accomodate you

in the above scenario

PLEASE DO POST BACK HERE - WHAT HAPPENS

Thanks

Hi Lemongrass

I have not been able to find a website from which a

Form TM.88 - Application for Visa on Arrival

can be downloaded

Have you found one?

If not - then to state the obvious ...

Do pick up extra copies of TM>88 on your First Arrival

so you can complete the Form (with photo) Prior

to flying on your "Transit" Journey

You will then be ready for any eventuality ...

Do keep us posted as to what happens

Hi Lemongrass

First I should say ...

I have friends who might be in similar situation to you and your B/F

So I phoned Air Asia

Seems this Budget Airline's Budget does not provide for Resources in the Transit Lounge.

They do not have a Desk or Representation there

I insisted on speaking to their Bangkok Manager and spoke to someone

who at least puported to be their "Manager"

She confirmed that Air Asia does not provide any services for their

Passengers in the Transit Lounge.

That "ALL" their passengers arriving in Bangkok by Air to join one of their flights

have to Clear Immigration - in order to gain access to their Check-In facilities.

So thats Budget for you - we get what we pay for !!! hahaha

I dont know how soon your Travel Plans are

But maybe your B/F could consider applying for a full Tourist Visa

to avoid the Visa on Arrival hassle

but whether the Thai Embassy / Consulates in India

issue Multi Entry Tourist Visas to make it worth his while ...

well he should contact them direct as it could well depend on his

personal situation

Have a Happy Trip
