Renew Work Permit And Extension To Stay

Featured Replies

I am a teacher at a private secondary school. My Work Permit and "extension to stay' expire on 18th december 2007.I expect to be offered a new contract.

1) Do I need a police clearance from anywhere for the renewal.(have been living in Thailand for the last four years)

2) Would I be best to apply now or closer to the expiry date.Does it matter to the authorities?

3) Is there any fee involved for the permit or IMO?

4) What does the school have to provide.A new contract presumably,a covering letter to the Ministry?

My previous docuementation remains the same.

5) Can the the new contract be, say, for six months as the school may fuss about not wanting to

commit themselves for longer until the start of the next school year. They are rather controlling types!

Thank you for any comments or advice.

What country are you from? The UK is taking about 6-8 weeks. I understand the USA is 4-5 months?

I don,t think you will need one if you are already in Thailand. It will vary from Imm office to Imm office.

You MAY need a Thai police check in Bangkok. Takes about 1 week i think.

As for a 6 month contract? You have to ask the school, but that would be unusual. They are normally 10 month or 12 month.

Good luck in any event

I just renewed visa and wp and didn't need one.

2) Would I be best to apply now or closer to the expiry date.Does it matter to the authorities?

I think they like it about a week or two before renewal. I did mine three weeks before and they questioned me about it.

3) Is there any fee involved for the permit or IMO?

Yes. I think it's still 3800 for one year plus 100 for filing. They'll prorate for shorter lengths of time.

4) What does the school have to provide.A new contract presumably,a covering letter to the Ministry?

You'll have to provide the same documents as last time, including a new contract.

5) Can the the new contract be, say, for six months as the school may fuss about not wanting to

commit themselves for longer until the start of the next school year. They are rather controlling types!

I don't think it matters what the length of the contract is. I've had both one term and one year contracts and wp was not a problem.

I think the OP needs to state what region he is in because Chonburi.............which covers Pattaya, ARE asking for police clearance regardless of how long you have been here.
