I'm interested in opening a business at some point in the near future in Issan. A few people have told me of the perils of local Police demanding a slice of the action. I know this goes on, my Wife's brother - in - law is a local copper ( in Somdet)

Has anyone heard any interesting stories about the enterprising critters doing similar activities?

Only time when I have ever heard of it going on is farang owners of Go Go  Bars, any legit business with the correct paper work is not exposed to the "Bar talk" of extortion.

So like the old saying goes, An honest man has nothing to worry about!

Yes it does go on.

I know of a Thai who installed three computers in their house and was charging them out by the hour.

The police came and he has to pay a monthly contribution to the police fund.

Like I just said:

If it is a legit business with the correct paperwork in place you will not be bothered by the boys in brown, but if you start a little side business from home as an extra earner and not pay taxes  like the last reader quoted then you are exposed and will attract their attention.
