NTC to prepare for complications of caller ID blockage

National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Secretary General Suranant Wongwitkumjorn (สุรนันท์ วงศ์วิทยกำจร) stated that the NTC is currently discussing measures in anticipation of problems that may arise from the ability of individuals to call without showing their caller ID. The commission is looking into legal aspects of protection for both callers and receivers.

The NTC affirms though that at the moment it has prioritized the right of privacy and the right to communicate, but it will continue to review how these rights apply to displaying caller ID’s. The NTC states that ambiguity arises when considering that callers have the right to shield their ID’s while receivers have the right to know who is calling them.

Some projected problems will be soliciting phone calls that become a public nuisance. Nonetheless, the NTC states that it will create its measures based on already existing laws.

PersonallyI don't see the ambiguity! Callers can shield their ID if they so desire, receivers shouldn't care who is calling them and can choose not to pick up if they don't want to?

Remember the old analogue days when you took pot luck ?

Withold ID, means that the callers no is requested to not be available to the receivers equipment - however the telecoms companies have access to in the event that the no is required.

But as pointed out, with a VoIP call the caller id can be irrelevant. Plus there are services for spoofing a caller ID. In fact if you have the right VoIP kit I think this may well be quite straight forward to provide whatever no you would like to provide. So you could call someone with a perfectly valid no and the receive would have no reason to suspect it it bogus, unless they know something in advance. You could of course call someone with their own no. I have done this in the past and it is quite interestig to see how the phone handles a call from its self !

Plus, with all these VoIP calling out solutions, Caller ID regulations are often meaningless in any country

if theres no caller id i dont answer it ,simple

I used to get endless complaints from nightclub owners requesting after hours service & emergency work in Australia because I wouldn't answer a call with no "caller ID" showing. Pointed this out to them & after a while most turned their ID's back on for their business phones & kept second sims for their personal calls.

As far as I am concerned, you want to contact me - show your ID! :o My decision as to whether I answer the phone or not. :D I am not an automaton! :D
