I am sure this has been covered before, but unfortunately it seems that nearly every page on Thaivisa has the words "swimming pool" on it and a search turns up lots of irrelevant threads.

I injured my ankle recently and have to stop running for a while. I want to start swimming so I can keep my fitness up. Where are some pools I can go to?

I know there is one at the 700 Year stadium, but it is a pretty long haul on the motorbike. Anything closer to downtown? I heard of something near Chiang Mai Land... any details/directions?

The hotel/guest house swimming pools probably are not an option for training... more like sunbathing.

Any help please!

To get to the Pongpote public pool in Santitam area, one easy way is to go north along the outside wall of the moat, past Chiang Mai Ram I Hospital, then straight ahead at the traffic light until the first 7-11 store, where you turn right down the narrow soi with a slight jog. The pool is on the right. Twenty baht for non members, not crowded at all in the winter, probably nearly deserted before school gets out.

Thanks everybody for the detailed directions/Google Earth pics. According to GE, it looks like both pools are 25 meter lengths. I will check out both of them this week!

Thanks again...

FYI - Chiang Mai Land pool is B50 for adults.

Also check out this thread - if you need some gym work to compliment the swimming and maybe work on your ankle when the time is right then The Orchid Hotel may be an option, to quote McSpicy:

I pay 8K/yr at the CM Orchid. Old gym, but all the stuff (bikes, treadmills, stairsteppers, free and machine weights, showers, sauna, towels, etc.)

Main draw for me is the great big pool. Not the biggest in CM, but at ~18 meters, does the job (I swim laps daily). And neither gym nor pool is ever crowded..... cool.gif

Some time ago I saw an add for "the real centre of the universe" at http://www.therealcentreoftheuniverse.com/.

I only looked at the webpage, but my impression from that was that this was a pool run, or at least created,

by people who know how to cater to people who swim for fitness (rather than just bathe in the pool).

I remember reading about dedicated lanes and times for lapswimming and the information on the website gave

me a very good impression. Unfortunatly the time set aside for lap-swimming did not fit my somewhat unorthodox

daily schedule, and perhaps the price was a bit expensive if I only go twice a week, but if not, that'd

be my first place to check out for anything "serious".

Anybody actually been there and can comment?

In addition to the pool at the "new" 700 year stadium, note that there is also an "old" 700 year stadium

within walking distance from the city centre. The old one has a 25m pool, compared to the 50m at the new

one.

Just had an excellent swim session at the Chiang Mai Land pool. Fifty baht, as someone mentioned, and it was not crowded at all--at one p.m. on a weekday. There were a few lap swimmers and some sunbathers, so I had a lane all to myself for the entire 60 minute session. Looks like some of the lads from the nearby all-male massage place were there getting fit, along with their farang dates.

The pool was clean, and it had changing cubicles and showers. Saw a sign for lockers for rent, though looks like most people just left their bags on the benches at the entrance.

I'll check out the pool at Santitam this week too. I read something about the entry fee being 20 baht, which sounds better than 50, though we'll see what the amenities look like.

Thanks all...

Pongpote pool is 20 baht maximum. If you use it regularly an annual membership is 200 baht, and then the daily entrance fee is 10 baht. I say "daily fee" because when I've gone twice in one day I haven't been charged the second time. Amenities are sparse, but the location is convenient for many of us.
