I found this one on the BBC but nothing to do with Thailand:- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7118456.stm

Troops storm Manila siege hotel

Police and army troops in the Philippines have stormed a luxury hotel in Manila which had been taken over by dozens of armed renegade soldiers.

Troops moved in after an 0700GMT deadline for the rebels to leave the Peninsula Hotel passed.

Gunshots have been heard and tear gas has been fired into the hotel lobby.

The soldiers, accused of a failed mutiny in 2003, occupied the hotel after breaking out of court where they were on trial.

They have called on fellow soldiers to withdraw their support for President Gloria Arroyo.

Live video footage from outside the hotel showed an armoured personnel carrier driving into the lobby, while two more were parked in front.

Before the assault, most of the guests had left, but a number of people were seen in the lobby and many journalists had refused a government order to leave.

So why not put it in the SE Asia forum? Why the need for mystery?

Unless there were another coup unfolding in Thailand I guess I miss the point of putting it here.

Yes thanks sbk, i had not realised there was a SE Asia forum until you pointed that fact out.

The reason i posted it was because i thought it would be of interest to people living in the region.

As far as not seeing the point, do you see the point of most of the threads you read here? I know i certainly don't.

Why the mystery? i was in a hurry to post it and get back to watching the events, it's not every day you get to see a tank being driven in to the lobby of a hotel, tear gas being employed and then the SWAT team storming the building, all live.

Thanks.

Chloe.

I dont know what all the fuss is about.

I spend a week every month in Manila (usually at the Peninsula, ironically) and such farcical attempts to overthrow the goverment happen with monotonous regularity. If it wasnt so tragic for the Philippines, it would be funny.

A country which 30-40 years ago was one of the economic leaders in Asia, has been crippled by decades of corruption to become a laughing stock.

Such a well planned and thought out coup.....attempt.

Reminds me of Vanuatu....the country to go if you want to rob a bank or murder your wife.....every time their is a coup there, the government lets out all the prisoners so that they can start again fresh.
