sriracha john Posted November 30, 2007 Share Posted November 30, 2007 Russian tourist arrested on suspicion of theft in Thailand MOSCOW - A Russian woman has been arrested while on holiday in Thailand on suspicion of stealing passports and a video camera from other tourists, Russian media reports said on Thursday. The Russian Embassy in Thailand said it was making enquiries into the arrest of Natalia Ivanova from the Siberian city of Irkutsk, who is in custody on the resort island of Koh Samui, 710 km (over 440 miles) from the capital, Bangkok. Embassy press secretary Alexei Bulkin said reasons for the arrest were not completely clear: "The consular service is enquiring into the arrest at the moment." Ivanova, who was arrested last Friday, insists the "young guys she got to know" at the Koh Phangan resort had stolen the items. Bulkin also said Ivanova could be released soon on bail, but she will have to stay in Thailand until her trial, which could take at least three months. Some media reports suggested the Russian tourist's arrest was in connection with drugs, the possession of which in Thailand carries the death penalty. Ivanova, along with her sister and three friends, arrive in Koh Phangan on November 21. She was arrested two days later after a search of her hotel room and questioning at a police station. On Monday, she was transferred to a Samui jail, Russian media reported. Natalia's friends, who met with her on Monday, said no formal charges had been brought against her at the time. Thai prisons are notorious for their poor conditions. Most foreign prisoners held in prison are those arrested on drug or possession charges. Ivanova is being kept at a police station of the nearby island of Samui. The Russian Consular Department is in touch with the law enforcement authorities and with Ivanova’s lawyers. Natalia Ivanova, 26, from the Siberian city of Irkutsk, along with her sister and three friends, arrived in the resort town of Koh Phangan on November 21. She was arrested two days later after a search of her hotel room. "Russian media reports that Ivanova was found to be in possession of narcotics and faces severe punishment, possibly the death penalty, are untrue," the ministry said in a statement. Ivanova faces charges of complicity in theft and possession of stolen goods and could be jailed for up to five years if found guilty, the ministry said. Nine Iranians and one Bulgarian were arrested with her. The judge declared he could not release Natalia on bail, because the case had become conspicuous and the judge feared the suspects might escape, Yelena said. On Tuesday, all the suspects detained, including the Russian woman, will be convoyed to court, the Russian woman's friend told Tass. Obviously, the court will decide whether their term in custody should be extended. Earlier, a possibility had been considered of releasing Natalia Ivanova on bail worth 12,000 dollars. Chief of the Russian Consulate in Thailand Vladimir Pronin told Tass that Russian tourist Natalia Ivanova from Irkutsk was suspected of being an accomplice in theft committed by young people who got acquainted with the Russian woman at the Thai resort. Ivanova, 25, arrived at the island of Pa-ngan with another four Russian holiday-makers on November 21. Two days later, local police searched their apartments and all the Russian tourists were detained. After an interrogation at a police station, police released four women, but Natalia was placed under arrest on suspicion of theft of passports and a camcorder from tourists. She spent 15 days in prison and was released on a 12,000-dollar bail after Russian diplomats intervened. Ivanova was ordered to remain in Thailand pending investigation results. But the evidence against her proved insufficient for referring the case to court, and local authorities dropped prosecution. She's the suspect of theft of passports and a camcorder. She arrives Nov. 21st with her sister and three other girls and is arrested 2 days later, Nov. 23 Four of them allowed to go and she stays 14 days in prison in Samui. Bail of US$ 12.000 after 2 weeks. She has to remain in Thailand. Case closed because there is no sufficient evidence.... 6 weeks later she's allowed to fly home. That's what you can call a nice holiday.... PS: the so called funny 'russian' remarks are not chique; I suppose it could happen to all of us.
