I have some paperwork from my pension company that requires a signature from me along with a witness who knows be but has some status. We know the Nai Yok (spelling?) What would be an equivalent person in the UKplease?

I'm in the middle of nowhere, also a friend of mine, an Aussie used the Gamnam for a similar issue, who is the wife's brother-in-law. However he's no longer in that role. Not many UK folk around here.

Just curious what title this person holds in Thai? Nai Yok is a catch-all phrase for high ranking people (usually used to mean the Prime Minister but I am guessing you aren't asking the PM to come and sign your papers).

So, is it the Kamnan or some other person that you would like to sign and what is their title in Thai (you can spell it out in our alphabet --I am sure most people can guess what you mean)?

The Kamnan isn't known to us, although we know who he is. The Nai Yok is based down at the Or Pat Tor (?) The Tambon admin office if you like. It's an elected post, but he's paid by the hierarchy. It must be higher than the Kamnan, because my wife's BiL wanted to run for the job, but his wife didn't fancy paying the voters again. When my wife returns from shopping I'll try to get here to type the Thai word out. Every one just calls him Nai Yok.

Right, the Nai Yok Or Bor Dor.

The direct translation is head of the Tambon Administrative Office but you could probably use something like Chief Administrator of the Tambon Administrative Office. Or perhaps Chief Representative or President of the TAO....

Hi Mosha:

You probabaly mean 'Nai Yok Tetsamontree' (นายกเทศมนตรี) simply known as 'Nai Yok'.

A 'Nai Yok Tetsamontree' translates best as Mayor

I'll run that by the boss when she gets home from buying Ranong. Thanks very much Stephen.

OK I run it by the step daughter and it's as SBK said

Nai Yok Or Bor Dor.

However thanks all.

The Nai Yok Tessamontri is the head of the Tessaban I believe. A completely separate organization. The Or Bor Dor was created by Chavalit when he was PM to, as my husband puts it, add another level of corruption onto local govt.

:o I've heard of the people who ran on his ticket complaining about the corruption. Complaining they weren't getting a share of it.

In the UK or US the equivalent person would be a notary public, ie, someone who is a registered witness and licensed to verify and record other people's signatures on official documents. They typically co-sign and emboss a stamp on to the signed document as proof. I tried to look up an equivalent on thai-language.com. Sorry, I'm not sure if there is such as thing as a notary in Thailand besides what the other responders have suggested. You may want to or need to go to a lawyer for this service.

Hi Spee. I've emailed the embassy and the pension co. I'll see what they say, though I have yet to get a reply from the embassy to a question I've posed while been in Thailand.

A local lawyer, backed by his company stamp should suffice.

Another option is your local Thai bank manager.

Mine authenticated a copy of my passport and that was accepted in the UK.

Scratch bank manager from the list. He looked terrified at the prospect.

Are you sure you need a witness 'of some status'? Who is the paperwork for?

Whenever I've done documents that needed to have witnesses they only thing that mattered was the number of witnesses.. Who they actually were nobody really cared about.

The form is for the Syngenta UK Pension Fund.

The selected must not be arelative, and should be a professional person (e.g. bank manager, lawyer, doctor, etc.) who knows you. I would prefer that they also provide a business stamp by their signature.
