I have to let one of my sales staff go after only 4 months. Does anyone know what notice/pay in lieu I am legally supposed to give? I'm trying to do this without asking my secretary.

If it is still within the probation, no notice necessary.

If it is after the probation, it depends on the reason for the dismissal. If it is a gross offense, you can also dismiss without notice. Not sure about the details here, though.

There were a couple of recent threads on this which went into great detail. Don't have them to hand unfortunately. I think the consensus, at least as i read it, was to offer some compensation below what was their entitlement unless you were very sure that none was due because the tribunals or whatever were on the side of the employees.
