"Riot police in China's enclave of Macau have been called in to calm mainland tourists angry they were being shown too many shops and not enough sites. "

I can just see it now - a Mexican standoff outside jewellers and tailor shops!

The three bullys who beat up an old man in a Pattaya bar should be made to face this lot :o

don't go on a package tour - discover by yourself what and when to see.

problem with macau that there is not much to see (cathedral, fort, hill, museum) - one day is enough

Agreed, unless you go to the Venetian, which will take up another day - I was there for three nights last week and still didn't see most of the Grand Canal shops.

The Chinese were probably on what is commonly known as a zero-dollar tour - you pay nothing to go on these tours, and the tour operators hope to recoup their investment when you buy something in the shops they take you to. I guess this particular group didn't bring their spending money :o

I have heard of tour operators that just leave the tour group stranded at a shop. They are not buying anything, the tour guide is not making any money, so they just take the bus and leave.

Many tour guides actually have to pay the tour company that organizes the tour money for each person on the bus. They make it back when they get kickbacks from the shops.

Ironically I complained about exactly the same thing around 6 or 7 years ago about a Tour of China. All pearl factories and gift shops when I could HAVE SWORN I paid to see the Great Wall and Terra Cotta Warriors! So I tried to leave the tour as I asn't afraid to do so (just use them to get me from place to place and find me a bed), and the tour organizor got stroppy with me...Guess I was giving 'ideas' to others....so bravo to the chinese tourists who said f-off.
