Govt Titles And Their Translations

This is coming off a thread in the Visas section where the OP was looking for a translation of the Nai Yok Or Bor Dor, someone thought the Nai Yok Tessamontri was the same office, and so it went, as these threads often do

Anyway, perhaps it might be useful to make a list of some of the official titles in govt; in romanisation, in Thai and their english translations.

Anyone want to get the ball rolling?

Nayok นายก is actually an abbreviation of a longer title. As such, officially if one uses the term นายก, one should really write

นายก ฯ to signify that this is an abbriviation (or there is more to follow, if one should write it out). However, nowadays people often omit the ฯ character. Maybe it is the change of time....

1. Nayok Rattamontri นายก รัฐมนตรี for prime minister

Rattamontri รัฐมนตรี for minister

2. Nayok Tessamontri นายก เทศมนตรี for mayor

Tessamontri เทศมนตรี for city council (I am using the title called in the US. Not sure what the British system calls it.)

"องค์กรปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่น" หมายความว่า กรุงเทพมหานคร องค์การ บริหารส่วนจังหวัด เทศบาล เมืองพัทยา องค์การบริหารส่วนตำบล และองค์กรปกครอง

ส่วนท้องถิ่นอื่นที่มีกฎหมายจัดตั้งขึ้น"

" 'Local Administration Organization' shall mean the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Provincial Administrative Organization, Pattaya City, The Sub-District (Tambol) Administrative Organization, and any other local government organization which the law may promulgate."

Thai local government in the provinces is composed of three elements:

องค์การบริหารส่วนตำบล (ong gaan-bor-rí-hăan sùan dtam-bon), "Sub-district Administrative Office", abbreviated as อ.บ.ต. (or-bor-dtor), in English "SAO".

The organization is made up of a Sub-district Council or สภา อบต. (sà-paa or-bor-dtor) whose members are called สมาชิกสภา อบต. (sà-maa-chík sà-paa). These members are elected.

The is headed by the นายก อบต. (naa-yók or-bor-dtor) or the "Chief Executive" of the SAO.

Note that the อ.บ.ต. and its administrative functions operate with the local (i.e., Tambol) arm of the Bangkok-based central bureaucracy whose head is the กำนัน (gam-nan) or "sub-district chief."

(The factual information is from an English language text titled, "Thai Local Government" published by Department of Local Administration, Bureau of Local Administrative Developments, Division of Technical Services and Foreign Affairs. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and Pattaya City are under a different system of administration.)

A parallel organization exists at the provincial level called the องค์การบริหารส่วนจังหวัด (ong gaan-bor-rí-hăan sùan jang-wàt) , or อ.บ.จ. (or-bor jor) , the "Provincial Administration Office or PAO. The head of the PAO is the นายก อบจ. (naa-yók or-bor- jor).

The organization has a council and members, all of whom are elected. Like with the tambol organization, the provincial administrative council and its executive work with the Governor of the province, the ผู้ว่าราชการ ( pôo wâa râat-chá-gaan).

I know this is an old thread. But, does anyone know what position (English title) the Nai Yok Or Bor Dor reports to ? The Thai word sounds like "saw saw."

I believe Saw saw (ส.ส.) is an abbreviation for Samachik Sapar สมาชิก สภา which means member of parliament. I don't know whether the Nayok Or Por Dor reports to a member of parliament though. I would guess not.

ส.ส. stands for สมาชิกสภาผู้แทนราษฎร -- Member of the House of Representatives, often referred to in short as MP (member of parliament), though sometimes MP is used to refer to both Senators (ส.ว. -- สมาชิกวุฒิสภา) and Representatives.
