I hear you. I too was at one point advised by a doctor to take borth control pills for premensytrual dysphasia (official medical term ofr what yused to be called PMS). In his defense this was about 15 years ago when less was known about the condition. Anyhow...BAD IDEA!!!!!!! To say the least. I went from having 10 horrible days a month to having 30..it was nonstop. So I stopped taking them and kept researching the matter, and ultimately tried natural progesterone with great results, later adding Zoloft after researchj came out shpwing it was effective in low doses for this condition.

Birth control pills will not help genuione PMD. But I find many women are unclear on the term and use "PMS" to refer to a wide range iof menstrual problems, including problems during menstrauation, which is not at all the same. Birth control pills often are helpful for reducing problems during menstruation (cramps etc) but for anyone with true PMD, forget it....it will make matters worse most often.

That's really interesting actually Sheryl - thanks. I suffer from both PMS and pains and have noticed that being on the combined pill helped the pains, but not the grouchiness, but never stopped to wonder why. Now I know!

  • 1 year later...

Found this through a search and bumping it because right now im I think my head is about to pop from pms. I find I can usually minimise symptoms by recognising them then, doing all I can to give myself a break from tasks or things that aggravate or stress me. But, unfortunately, I had a visa trip in Laos last few days, in which every small thing seemed to get under my skin. I find that normal everyday things, small problems (or even big ones), that would cause me some minor frustration become amplified at this time. Its upsetting to feel I cant control my emotions well enough. I dont take the contraceptive pill as I havent found one yet that sits well with me (I have found most aggravate any pms problems and i somehow feel not myself.), so im trying to find a natural aid to reduce the feelings I have during this time. For the rest of the time in the month, I can laugh things off, dont let things fester or get to me, but, at these times, I really dont feel emotionally stable, and dont like myself much. Not that im a screaming banshee or anything. I just mean that I feel that im constantly on the boil for a few days, where i have to keep talking myself into remaining calm. Its uncomfortable and upsetting. Thankfully, for the most part, my bf understands, so if he can do no right at this time, he knows the best thing is just to let me have time on my own until the feeling subsides. But, that isnt really an ideal situation either, for either of us.

Im interested in the Natural progesterone idea. How many have experience of this (or other natural remedies)? How do you apply the cream (of course i can google that anyway, but I thought a natural remedy would have to be ingested. Didnt know a cream could be applied). Are their any side effects. My main worry is aggrivating the problem. I would rather have a few days of feeling this way (for even though I dont like it, it at least is regular as clockwork, so i know it well), than a few days of strange or severe symptoms I dont know well, or worse, a longer duration.

Thanks for any views/advice.

I was on Yasmin for a few months and I was absolutely looney the whole time and it took a while to figure out that the pills were doing it. I switched to a low dose pill (but not a micro pill) and felt saner with almost no PMS. It seems that it make take a few tries to find the right pill.

Oh wow, Yasmin.. I tried that pill about six months back as I heard it can help oily skin too. Worse decision ever! Not only did i feel crazy the whole time (about 1-2 months in of taking it), I developed a debilitating migraine that lasted for 3 days which my boyfriend had to take me to hospital for. Was told to stop taking Yasmin and given a lot of pain killers and sleeping pills to get me through it. Although I get occasional headaches, i have never had an experience like that before. Afterwards, I used google to find out if it had happened to anyone else..seems it did. I guess some people just have negative effects on some contraceptive pills, so maybe it was just bad luck, but i personally I think its a good idea to be very cautious if considering Yasmin as a contraceptive.

Yep, same problems here for years, and now just having returned to the west and approaching menopause I thought I could finally breath a sigh of relief it will soon be all finished. Nope, no such luck. Am on the waiting list to see a gyne specialist after an internal ultrasound showed polyps and fibroids!! blah. If I have to work until I am 67 I am determined to get this sorted out once and for all. My current GP recommended the following website, google Jean Hailles.org.au; has all the latest updates and research and I can recommend some of the recipes too!!
