Pick Up With Green Number Plate?

Featured Replies

I just bought a Hilux xtra cab through a friends company. Next week they will change my red number plate to a green one. Does anybody know what the meaning of the green number plate is and why the hilux my friend bought for the same company 3 years ago has a black number plate?

I just heard that cars with a green number plate will be checked more often by the police.

Is it a problem to change the registration of the car in four years to my name?

thanks for any reply.

Red are viewed as temporary plates. Officially there used to be certain restrictions, eg not allowed to drive after 6pm. Black plates are when registration is completed.

On red plates, these used to be issued by a formal official body, and there were 2 types: copy and original. Dealers often asked for a THB deposit, eg 2,000 while you kept them. The problem was the official/formal body could never issue enough/ have enough stock, and they cost more. So dealers started using "copy" red plates. Last I was aware, the police were more likely to imply the restrictions to "copy" red plates than "original red ones". i.e seemed to overlook they had been copied in the first place, but come down harder on the law with them.

So as it used to be:

- Black plates: least likely to be singled out

- Original/Authentic red plates: more likely to be single out

- Copy red plates: most likely to be singled out

Green plates. No idea!

GREEN IS COMMERCIAL USE I BELEIVE,.

Company registered vehicle license plate: 2 Green letters and 1, 2, 3 or 4 green digits, on a white background. Better have someone check your registration.

Yes, the car is registered on the company of my friend. What I dont understand is why their Hilux and the two vans that are registered on the company as well have a black number plate?????

Is it a new law with the green number plate?

Is it true that it is more likely to be checked by the police with a green number plate??

thanks for the replies so far.

2 door pickup = green plate (light goods vehicle)

4 door pickup, car, van etc = black plate (passenger vehicle)

My 2 door pick-up has black characters on white background.

I think we should look at tolsti's link (the first reply in this thread). :o

My 2 door has green letters on a white background, and definitely not company registered.

Back to the drawing board.

Well, just because somebody has set up a website it does not make it definitive information :D If it was an official site then maybe.

My brother in law has just got a new 2 door Vigo, private purchase, definately not company registered, and its green on white plates.

Just simple observation on the road, this does seem to apply; unless there is some Thailand wide monkey business going on :D

How old is your pickup? The green plates are a relatively new introduction (no I don't remember how recent).

The green plates allow various tax advantages if the vehicle is in company ownership but they don't necesarily mean that it is a company vehicle. You will never see green plates on anything other than a 2 door pickup.

I bought it new from Toyota in Nov 2546, but it wasn't registered until Jan 2547, so it's just over 4 years old.

Never say "never" :D - don't forget hotel taxis:
