Beavis and Butthead Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Here is a list of 20 of the most popular AOR bands of all time. I thought a vote might be interesting.
kayo Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 One Klown's vote so far... O.P, You voting? G'n'R were a 90's version of Led Zep, and great, but not in the same league as LZ.
Ulysses G. Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 The poll is f___ed. To be fair, you would need to list every Beatles LP and at least half of the Stones and Zepplins. This is just a crapshoot!
Goshawk Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 where's Led Zeppelin II ? i vote for that..
Old Croc Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Sgt Peppers?? The most radically different album ever!

UG you are absolutely correct, certainly we could list many more LPs here: white album revolver abbey rd sgt peppers exile on main st goats head soup breakfast in america zep II, IV Aja - Dan and on and on
crowbait Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 I can think of a few more rock bands conspicuous by their absence: Deep Purple...................how more iconic can you get than the first bar of Smoke on the Water Jethro Tull......................Aqualung, arguably the best themed rock album ever Traffic............................among the top progressive rock bands King Crimson....................pretty, dam_n cool Focus..............................neither Brit nor yank, but still cut the mustard Fairport Convention...................well you've got Eagles for country-rock so why not Fairport for folk-rock, and they're still going, 40 years on!! Chicago..............................big bandish but oh! sooo professional. Alice Cooper.....................what an act! Mothers of Invention..............RIP Frank.........Didn't much like meself, but respect,,,,,,,,, Cream..............................can't think of enough superlatives The Nice............................rocked the classics to hel_l and back Santana..........................Early stuff classes as a rock band, doesn't it? To finish, why, oh why no Jimmy Hendrix Experience.............yes he was a rock band I rest my case, me Lud!

rgs2001uk Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 dont know who put this together, but there are certain artists missing, which i would assume are in everyones collection. no neil young, bob dylan or van morrison. imho astral weeks is the best album ever released, it has stood the test of time and sounds as fresh today as it did way back then, jeez i am going to have to go and listen to fridays child and just like a woman from the live at the pacific heights 1971 album. someone else mentioned traffic, yes i agree, steve winwood is like a decent bottle of wine, he just gets better with age, just listen to dont you know what the night can do off the roll with it album. what about what i consider to be one of the best ever, the mighty john fogerty and ccr?
Beavis and Butthead Posted December 17, 2007 Author Posted December 17, 2007 Yes indeed and funny you mention some of these guys like CCR, Van Mo, Hendrix, Young, Traffic and Dylan because they were in my mind but I wanted to do a poll and 20 is the limit on a poll. Certainly Mr Fantasy, Astral Weeks, Cosmo's Factory, Elec Ladyland, Harvest, After the Gold Rush and any number of early Dylans are more than worthy. Rock on
YangYaiEric Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Here is a list of 20 of the most popular AOR bands of all time. I thought a vote might be interesting. Oy! Why did you leave-out RUSH from your list ? Probably THE most brilliant band ever to have NOT become mainstream in the history of the rock industry! IMHO
mackayae Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 The're all great. I wouldn't pick one over the other. Depends on the mood.

FroggyQc Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Yeah! Pink Floyd's there but the Album The Wall is missing! Dark Side is good but in my opinion The Wall is realy better! Anyways! At Least, Pink Floyd is there!
lazeeboy Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 for me i grew up listening to bowie ,so many different sounds ,and stll around 35 years after his 1st hits ..

I grew-up on RUSH! I remember so well back in Sixth Form, a group of us used to bring in Rush LPs to listen to and play our AirGuitars during our lunch break! Magic years they were! May Geddy Lee et. al. live on for eternity! Quicky for you. Does Red Barcheta ring a bell with you?
rgs2001uk Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 hemisperes and probably the last decent rush album permanent waves, before they discovered synths and started to give us such crap as the fm radio friendly rubbish of tom sawyer and the red barchetta. still like to listen to proper rush a la all the worlds a stage, can take the likes of time stands still, limelight and freewill in moderation. does anyone actually listen to roll the bones and test for echo these days, i prefer working man etc before they started going all police era synchronicity. still each to their own and to their credit still going strong after all these years. btw why has roxy music eno era not been mentioned, another great band that lost it by going fm radio friendly.
suiging Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 The sheer joy of drowning out the street with early SLADE is hard to ignore.

You're a TRUE Rush fan, by the contents of your post! I beg to differ with you on TomSawyer AND Red Barcheta though Roxy Music was another band I enjoyed; they were superb! (Virginia Plain ! ) Now then, what about Wishbone Ash? Noone has mentioned them yet?
rgs2001uk Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 yangyaieric, you have gone and pissed me off now by mentioning wishbone ash. i had things planned for this afternoon, but they can wait, going to dig out theres the rub and argus and blow the cob webs from the speakers, oh the joys of pilgrim, the king will come, blowin free etc. another stonking guitar album is humble pie, rocking the filmore. i also love bill nelsons giutar work in no trains to heaven from the first be bop deluxe album axe victim, another excellent solo is on adventures in a yorkshire landscape from the live in the air age album. as you can see i tend to prefer rockier guitar based music, that may well be why i lost interest in rush, as i said earlier still love stuff such as finding my way, working man, bastille day, even the quiter ones such as lakeside park and fly by night. for me the best era was fly by night and 2112, and the perfect compilation of the mighty all the worlds a stage. its good to see them still going strong after over 30 years in the business, and they are releasing what they want to release and not giving a toss about the record companies, however i just wish they would loose the sysnths and get back to rockier guitar based albums. anyway been good talking to someone who appreciates good music. shine on

Pleasure indeed, mate! You're obviously an afficianado of rock, and I take my hat off to you! I thought I was the only Rush fan out there. My 2 most favorite Rush tracks of all time are Passage to Bangkok and Cygnus X12. Absolute DYNAMITE! Have to admit, though, I find nothing wrong with Rush's use of synths, especially on Tom Sawyer and Red Barcheta ProgRock-on!

I'm with you on this one YangyaiEric, I bet the OP wished he hadn't bothered now though My particular 'favourite' is Spirit of Radio. However, after so many quality tracks maybe naming a favourite is impossible.

But Cygnus X12 takes the listener to a place far, far away Simply Magical !
Fred Sanford Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 I'm a Pet Sounds fan myself, Paul McCartney's favorite album of all time. Another side note, Spirit of Radio is a great tune
