do you feel that stricter immigration laws are necessary to help protect the thais from farangs who exploit the favorable exchange rates, and the normally good nature of the thai people, in order to pursue their indulgences...

i'd go for otter

does it matter ?

AH which Thai culture would that be.....

The rich Thai's that dont care about the poor Thais and make all the rules...

Or the poor Thai's who have limited education and get screwed by the rich Thais, all their lives.....unless a farang comes into their lives and everything changes!!

:o

there's your answer.

plain and simple

(where was the people like harry palmer) choice :D

All they really want is our money.

A collecting box at the airport would save a lot of trouble with visa's etc.

Just deposit the money and get back on the plane.

That is the best suggestion of the day.

I am tired of the Farangs that try to Justify their existance as a sex tourist by stating that they bring good money to Thailand, Thailand needs their money!

Astral has the perfect solution. Leave the money and turn round on the next available flight, better still, just send it by bank transfer, you can send more cos you saved the airfare.

So we come over here bring money and don't take anything out of the economy yet about left and right while there are how many Thais living in Britain and getting government hand-outs??!!

Don't get me wrong people should be allowed to get a live where ever they want as far as I am concerned but the idea of making the immigration procedures more difficult here is ridiculous not to mention the effect that not having people coming to Thailand would have on the economy.

Hey I am a poor Thai guy. How much handouts does the British government give out to people like me? Are they more generous if I have a bunch of kids? Perhaps I will buy my tickets tomorrow for myself and my family and move to Britain where the handouts are generous. It will be great to get out of the backwoods I call home.

I just have to save for about 30 years on my 150 baht a day income to earn enough for plane tickets. I can travel there on a tourists visa...I am sure I won't have a problem getting that. I know, I will just charm them into granting me a visa using by upcountry Thai accent.

If I am not granted a visa, then I can always sneak in a cargo ship and once landed (assumming I am not dead first) claim refugee status or political assylum and live life like a king on free handouts!!!

Look at the effect letting people in had on the US Muslim extremists crashed planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

What if Thailand told all farangs to bug out What would you say then "I didn't like the place anyway" Probably. :o

well first of all congratulations on your exellent English I am sure you could get far more than a 150 Baht a day if you put your mind to it.

It is very true we have the options as western people of (theoretically) zipping all over the world. However I will not apologize for my post as the simple facts are these.

Non-nationals are granted tourist visas to visit the UK and having got there many people stay long term.

Non-nationals are able to own and run their owns businesses in the UK.

Non-nationals are eligable for free health care and education in the UK.

and many many more

I want none of these things from poor old Thailand although being able to own stuff might be nice and not have to go over the border how many times a year. The 400% price hike of immigration fees have already made it difficult to live here.

But then the British and their Government being so rich perhaps we should scour the fields of Isaan for poor farmers and fly them to the UK... or perhaps YOU should use your exellent English skills to alert the world to the plight of the poor people in Thailand.

I agree with you. We should be allowed to live wherever we want as long as we can afford it. But truth be told, it's very easy for a big country's passport holder to come here. Just show up and get in the country. While Thais have to attend an interview when apply for a Visa. That's not too bad. What's very bad is most of genuine applications have been turned down. I think we can live with a bit more strict Immigration procedures.

Take my ex as an example. He's a Canadian. So, he could just hop on the plane and get in the country right away. He never had a work permit. But in fact, he came here to work. He never paid taxes. And he took loads of THB out of our country. Any Immigration officer around here? :o

So that is the answer is it internatioal terrorism can be stopped by Thailand charging exorbatant fees to enter the country?????

And no I would not cry 'I didn't like the place anyway' I would be very upset... I do indeed like Thailand despite the annoyances to be found in any developing country, I have not forgotten the reason that I left the UK in the first place. How is it beneficial to anyone to have the immigration precedures of this country so difficult?

My 6 month old baby has to have a visa to be here, I am sure that will hold back the tide of international terrorism, what a bloody joke!

Well I know that the working illegally thing happens a lot mainly thanks to the fact that emplyers have different ideas about what qualifies a person to fill the vacant position than their government does.

As for the he left the country with loads of Thai Baht, I find that a bit hard to swallow.... What was he doing? I assume teaching English

If he was working for a well paying company in another field he would have had a work permit.

I was using that as an example I didn't say anything about charging money to stop international terrorism If all country's didn't have a immigration sysytem then it would mean real problems right??

Whatever reason you are in Thailand You chose to be in Thailand Those are the rules so u have no choice but to live with it Correct??

I live in the US and whatever anybody says about it is OK by me I was born in thailand I left when I was 3 had no choice really My Mom grabbed me My step dad brought us here We came here legally My Mom came by choice I don't complain about it one bit Because I know where I come from My Mom told me not much opportunity in thailand well I'm talking abut 1969 Not now I don't know what they have now because I don't live there. she told me those things about opportunity when i was a little bit older.

Your six month old baby needs a visa because those are THAILANDS rules if you don't like it hop on the next flight out

Didn't expect any apologies and frankly no need for one. Those are your views. My sarcasm reflected your statement on the "many" Thais living off of handouts from the British government. If that was true, I would like to see some statistics instead of someone spouting it off without facts.

So let me offer some counterpoints strictly speaking.

Non-nationals are granted tourist visas to visit the UK and having got there many people stay long term.
Talk to the many Thais that have applied and did not qualify. In fact probably over 75% of Thais will not qualify for a tourist visa at all...to anywhere much less be able to afford to leave here.

Thailand makes it easy to come in but a lot more dificult to stay permanantly. I agree it should be more foreign friendly for those with good intentions to stay and granted the same priviledges as a Thai.

There are many here who wants to stay long term and have the background which will also benefit the kingdom if they are granted permanent residency. However, there are many that in my view are frankly, other countries trash and really should go back.

Non-nationals are able to own and run their owns businesses in the UK.  Non-nationals are eligable for free health care and education in the UK.

and many many more

Again agree with you. For those who can actually afford to immigrate to England, they probably have the abilities to work and contribute to societly or in fact as you stated open and own a business.

The point here is if you can actually afford to immigrate...most countries will accept you. If you can't most coutries don't want you.

I agree with HKThai I live in the states and they are always showing how our borders with mexico and canada are so pourous, The mexicans come here for hand outs also and they die to get here last one i saw on the news a truk filled with them like 35 people only 4 were alive

Some cross the desrt with no water!!!! The bordor patrol says that they find bodies around the border all the time, I also saw a news report that a lady that had her property on the border was scaring the people back over with her shotgun and six shooter pistol.

Plus if you go to a country illegally and then they let you stay how else are you going to live if you have no job and have a family I think you need to get some kind of assistance

I didn't mean to offend, nor do I now but my understanding is this... but as a business owner, surely he could have got one?

More importantly, how to make this QUOTE thing work?

Maybe he didn't want to pay taxes - so didn't put his name up?

The other part - just click on 'quote' at the top of the post you want to quote. Works for me :o

Personally, I don't think its a question of making the Immigration rules harder or easier, its a case of they should be different.

Ignoring tourism which is easy, which is logical, and pretty much hassle free.

Immigration is good for a country - any country - as long as it brings in people that are willing to work and can return money to the country through taxes and buying things (domestic economic cycle). This is of course if that immigrant is not a straight replacement for a national who in turn becomes a drain on the country (as s/he now has no job).

Therefore, it makes sense to capture people that will either: bring in missing skills; bring in new bussiness from abroad; help to improve the economy (investors); improve/add to the image (promote the country - sports people, actors, musicians etc); those that will bring money, but do not require a job (retirees, the rich); those that will create new jobs (businessmes/investors).

It makes more sense to make these people citizens or at least residents. This is best way to both instill a new national pride and, more importantly, keep the money earned in the country.

The govenment belief is that people on work permits take jobs from the nationals and money from the country. It seems better to use the Immigration Rules to make sure that the only people on work permits are those that can not be sourced at home (specialist skills including the ability to teach native language as a skill as well as the usual IT etc) - with the exception of foreign government employees (embassy staff etc) and foreign journalists. As for those immigrants mentioned above, hone the tests to include as many of the above people as possible for residency/citizenship. This would enrich the country, safe guard against the Kee-Nok that we all love-2-hate (they could only be tourists - reduce the amount of back-2-back tourist visas in conjunction), and give the country an investment for the future.

i feel we have gone off topic here somewhat... we need some more input from the beavers & the otters... not to mention the butt contingent... :o

i am genuinly shocked by the great number of western men with their young thai women. isn’t this flagrant economic exploitation? western men visiting thailand for sex holidays certainly take advantage of the thais’ abasement and hankering for western wealth and lifestyle – a blind yearning that turns many thai women into active participants in their own exploitation...

fyi, mai pen rai is often interpreted in the wrong context. the term actually reflects the surplus society of the past, not a lackadaisical attitude...

surely just a product of the fact that western men generally do have more money than Thai men. Prostitution is certainly not a result of us being here nor do western men do the majority of the whoring.

For some reason we prefer to do it publicly however.... she really does like me / she said she loves me etc.. etc..

For those women who are lucky enough to have a choice about what part of the huge Thai sex industry they will be in (i.e. the ones not chained to their beds or locked in closed brothel on the Burmese border) Pattaya / Patong are probably pretty sound options.
