I just spent the last hour eating dinner in a restaurant beside The Sunday Walking Street - a big tourist attraction in Chiang Mai. The restaurant has big signs out front in English and Thai advertising the use of its toilets for 5 baht per person and there is a constant stream of Thais and farangs coming in to use them. There is a big box with a slot asking for 5 baht in both languages right in front of the bathroom, but it is the honor system. No one is there to enforce the rule.

EVERY Thai that I saw paid without being asked and not one tried to sneak in. I even saw some going over asking the restaurant cashier for small change so that they could pay.

Every farang that I saw - and these were middle class tourists, not backpackers - ignored all of the signs and other people paying and when they were with a Thai who would point it out, they would get all indignant and refuse to pay.

Now, I'm pretty darn sure that they would have paid if someoine was there watching them. Are we as honest as we put on? :o
