Duchamps would have liked London's 'look out' loo. This on-street convenience has walls made of one-way glass, meaning you can watch others go about their business while you do yours. All passers by see is their own reflection (which can be a bit unnerving if they start doing their hair while you're 'going').

If you like a chilly breeze

Near Sweden's Mount Kebnekaise, a little stand-alone dunny overlooks lakes packed with trout and surrounded by fly-fishers (so make sure you do up your fly when you come out).

A little commentary with your lavatory

Fujikyu Highland is one of Japan's most impressive theme parks, and includes one of the world's largest roller coasters. But better yet is the men's toilets: inscribed over the urinals in foot high letters is the text, 'So big! Unbelievable!...She loves it!' Try not to feel inadequate.

Aim for Warney!

Horse Bazaar bar in Little Lonsdale St, Melbourne, takes digital art seriously. They run a digital art prize and have a giant projection canvas behind the bar. But even better is the rear projection unit behind the urinals - depending on what's screening you can pee on the footy, A Current Affair or a late-night movie from Slovenia.

A bygone era

At Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, just off Scotland's west coast, you can use some of the most delightful conveniences the Victorian era produced. These public loos are fitted out in black marble, with gleaming brass plumbing and intricate Moorish tiles. And of course, they're spotless.

Get up close with elephants

It's not enough that this toilet is bright pink, has no walls or roof, and overlooks a gorgeous tropical valley. To make a list like this you need something special. The toilet at Ban Kwan Chang elephant camp on Koh Chang has - you guessed it - elephants.

Note: My personal Thailand favourite toilets would have to be -

1) Male toilet at Koh Samui airport. I just loved the large aquarium inside the sliding doors at the entrance.

2) Hollywood Disco at Pattaya - relaxing neck and shoulder massage while I was doing number 1s.
