Her family has basically been supportng me as the 30 day arrival visa plus visitor's visas do not permit me to work. It also sounds like I have to apply for these visas outside of Thailand, is that correct? After you are married you can apply for a Non Imm O Visa valied for 90 days. Maybe even a Multi Entry , but would probably need some money in the bank.

The Non Imm O can be extended for a year at a time in Thailand if you and your wife have a monthly income of 40,000 Baht.

You can work with this Visa providing you have a work permit.

There is no visa that allows you to work. You must have a job that allows a work permit to be issued for that. Once you have found the job and have the paperwork you can then obtain a non immigrant visa that would allow the work permit to be issued. But until you are married or have paperwork for a job there is not much option other than tourist visas in the local area.
