Chiang Khong Border

Recommended Posts

With the new ruling on the money issue at Mae Sai, would it be better to go to Chiang Khong as a walker? Anybody doing this? Same sort of set-up as Mae Sai or right pain in the preverbial?

It is of course a very sportive approach. Especially if you live more than five-hundred kilometers from Chiang Khong.

One day at home each month and there you go again.

And to make it even more sportive you walk first to Bangkok to get a cheaper visa for Laos there. They are quite expensive in Chiang Khong.

My admiration, give me a call when you pass Chiangrai. I'll hand you a bottle of water you can drink while I treat your blisters.

Thumbs up!

Dear Champ,

You can also walk to Meachan and from there to Chiang Saen.

There you report to the Immigration Office which will give you a little note that you are not blacklisted.

Then you walk on another 12 kilometer to Ban Sobrak at the Golden Triangle (nice walk along the Mekhong River), where you take the free ferry to the casino in Burma. Fifteen minutes later you are back with your stamp (unless you are a gambler).

When in the newspapers and other media the little war was going on and 'Maesai' was closed, the border checkpoint at the casino was open all the time.

But a lot of visa-runners played the war-game as well. Whaw (or something similar) they said, there is a war going on, so we can not enter Burma. They went to very exotic places like Malaysia, Cambodia and Laos to get their stamps.

I never understood why. The Golden Triangle is only 32 kilometers from Maesai and it is a beautiful road to there. Ideal for walking.

Especially for bar-sitters it is a nice opportunity to get some fresh air and enjoy the beauty of this famous area. And to walk all way is of course the best thing to do.

Heart and vessel diseases, obesity, think about it.

I think you are an example to most of us. Good luck Jacky Walker!

There's me showing my ignorance, forgot you needed a visa to enter Laos. I live in Chiang Mai, Limbo, so the extra jaunt on a big bike, as opposed to Mae Sai, wouldn't have been a problem.

Limbo, thanks for the hearty reply. I'm not actually a walker. That's what they stamp you as in your passport if you're doing the 30 day visa run. :o

I've done a bit of hiking in New Zealand and various other places, but more of a lager lout nowadays. The walk along the Mekong does sound enticing though, may try it someday (in the cool season, of course).

cheers
