I am in need of some assistance from anyone about your farming conditions/techniques today! I am currently a college student in North Dakota, U.S., and I have chosen to study Thailand's agricultural status.

I am looking for pertinent information, especially pictures, on your agriculture sector in Thailand. I have Googled for several hours and I believe this is the best place that I can find information, from you, the people who are doing it first hand.

What I am specifically looking for right now is:

major crops and what they are eventually used for (exports, commodities)

average farm size

farming techniques--any crop rotation, fertilizer usage??

equipment used-tractor, "mechanical" buffalo (This was all I could find on Google!!), plow, cultivator??

equipment cost

equipment size-horsepower, width

major brands of equipment

I am new to this site so I will be trying to get through a lot of these posts, but not exactly sure if I will cover the whole 21 pages. So if anyone would like to assist me, it would be much appreciated. Also, if anyone has any questions about myself, feel free to ask, and I'll try to answer the best I can.

Thanks in advance.

Come on Fella's we're not being very helpful here

But be careful we (or I) mostly give opinions based on personal experiences but I do know

Thailand used to be the number one exporter of rice in the world now second to Vietnam

I "THINK" it is the largest exporter of pineapple

IT is also in the top five I think for Rubber and Palm Oil. I suggest you google all that for correct answers

Its mainly mono-cropping from what I see. But some area's are doing Maize Corn/Sunflower/Bean/sorghurm rotation

Some area's Mono or double cropping can be sustainable here due to the flooding of the rice paddies, which kills all the nasty bacteria and nematods in the soil. So you see a lot of vege planting after rice in the dry season and then back into rice in the wet season back to the same vege in the dry season

Average farm size I think depends on location in Thailand and what they are growing. A stab in the dark 1-2 ha

Thats are start some others can pitch in too

I don't think many of us are familiar with the far south especially with land prices. It sounds like a LOT of money for a rubber plantation but I base that on Issan prices.

I raised a family in North Dakota and will give you the same advice my family got when posing an opportunity for me to do their homework for them. There are already many posts in the forum talking about much of what you are asking us to regirgitate again. Get busy and do the research yourself. I am not going to do your homework for you.

The questions posted have all been addressed here on the farm forum over the time since I have become a member. The exception may be average farm size, 1 to 2 ha. was mentioned which would fit for the northern area I am familiar with. Larger farms are normally planted in fruit trees, or crops which can be planted, weeded, and harvested by machine, 1 or 2 times a year. This is probably due to the fact that a family can only take care of about 10 to 15 rai where extensive labor is required. Which it is, in the care of 2 to 3 crops per year. Also very little machinery is required for this size of plot, and if require, can be rented for a day or so. Another limiting factor on farm size is, finding large adjoining land for sale to make a big farm as you see in US, where you are at.
