I understand that if I buy a chipped Xbox I will not be able to use Xbox live. If this is the case; is it possible to buy an unmodified Xbox in Thailand, preferably the USA version which seems to be more compatible with available games on Play-Asia.com.

I don't think you would have problems with XBox Live as long as you don't attempt to play pirated games, as far as I know the bans occur not because of the chip but because of copied games, several people have mentioned buying only the games that they want to play online and pirating the rest.
