Danger Down South?

Featured Replies

I just came across an account of some of the violence that has occured in Southern Thailand. Does anyone know what the current situation is as far as non-Thai's are concerned? Can farangs travel around down there or are they also targets? It seems like a case of rebels against the authorities, but one would hate to end up as a hostage or a bombing victim.

The army, police, teachers and public servants are the main targets of these attacks. Innocent rubber farmers have often been killed too...non-Thais are generally not the targets.

Where in the South do you want to travel to?? I feel the 3 provinces are dangerous and aren't worth the risk of going there!! what would you want to see??

For those seeking an adventure holiday the south may fit the bill. If relaxing is more your aim then perhaps it is best avoided.

stay away from the 3 provinces and its as safe as anywhere

  • 3 weeks later...

I rode down through the 3 main trouble spots a couple of weeks ago on my ride down to Malaysia. I stayed the night near the border at Tak Bai, on the coast. I stopped a few times and met some really nice people. They expressed a little suprise as to me being there but at no time did I feel intimidated or worried. They wished a few more Farangswould come visit as the felt if there was more farangs there things might not be as bad as they are for them. I think something needs to be done but I would not know what to suggest. There is some beautiful scenery and beaches down there and with some proper marketing it could be really big. Fingers crossed for the future. I went on the " RIDE FOR PEACE " run at the Hat Yai bike weekend and would love to organise something for down there. Maybe a " RIDE ROUND THE SOUTH " tour? Lets hope some one can sort this mess out soon. :o
