Best Place To Buy A Digital Camera

Featured Replies

Hi Everybody,

I will be in BKK this weekend and am looking for a digital camera.

My plan is to head over to Panthip Plaza. Good idea? Yes/no?

If anyone else has a spot in BKK where they think there are some deals to be had, input is appreciated.

Cheers !

Panthip is ok but try Fortune IT Mall and MBK as well.

Cheers.

I would also go to Fortune. It feels less seedy and packed there and you dont get hassled by the porn merchants. I bought a Sony H9 there recently and got the VAT refund form done without asking

Pantip is a place to avoid these days.

There is a gauntlet of punks hustling Porn, DVD, Software blocking the escalators.

They have gotton so aggressive, they are grabbing onto you.

Watch your pockets in there!... and don't expect any after sales service... like warranty or returns.

Fortune is much better.

Take the MRT to RAMA 9 station.

in Pantip, Fortune, and almost EVERY bigger regular shopping-mall in every bigger town u will find a branch of the reputable HARDWAREHOUSE. they have almost 100 shops throughout the Kingdom....

they publish a huge 8-12 pages booklet every 3-4 weeks, which gives u a great overview of whats on offer and at which prices. even its mostly in Thai its still VERY useful.

another member of TV guided me to that company about 2 years ago, and since then, I am a loyal customer of hardwarehouse...... hassle-free and rip-off-free

www.hwhinter.com is their website

I was just in Japan a few weeks ago and surprised to know that Thailand is cheaper for alot of digital cameras but some flashes or lens are cheaper there. I compared a few different brands & went to Panthip, MBK etc. and also online web's and the number 1 cheapest place to buy in Thailand is Here. Check them out. Let me know if you find cheaper.

The IT store on the upper level of the Central Rama III Mall has a good selection of digital cameras. Prices all seem about the same everywhere to me.

I've found Singapore much cheaper than Thailand for electric goods. I bought my daughter a portable DVD player with a 9 inch screen. In Thailand they retailed at around 5000baht for the one I wanted (she is 5 so the more "plastic" and cheaper the version the better). I came back to Singapore and bought and identical (same battery life and accessories) for just 2,000baht in the electrical dept of Giant supermarket.

Prices are not the same everywhere - if you are willing to buy gray market. For travelers that may not be advisable if they require a factory guarantee as gray market will be a shop specific type. See this website for current prices and low price leaders (will mostly be gray shops).

Depends what kind of digital camera you're looking for.

A DSLR or P&S?

There are excellent shops for both here - if P&S, get it at a big shopping mall.

If a DSLR - give U-Camera a try.

Good luck - and get the proper papers for a VAT refund.

Do I get a VAT refund if I live in Thailand? Can I submit and get a refund if I take a trip out of the country? How does that work?

I've heard that cameras are more expensive because they have higher standards for the Japanese domestic market.

I don't think so. The Panasonic Lumix I purchased least month from Pix-One at the lowest price in Thailand is a Japanese version (sealed Panasonic guarantee is valid only in Japan).
