Hi This is my first reply to a post but hopefully I am following the rules...I have a petrol Fortuner that I too would like to get tuned brakes, suspension since these are awful and possibly engine improvements like ECU or more also but I have no idea where to go...would prefer a one stop shop preferably in Phuket but I can drive back to BKK to get the work done since I usually fly back to BKK for work during the week. I would assume it would be cheaper and better quality work in BKK also.

If you can send a link or contact details of an english speaking shop that would be great..Thanks in advance

Arto TRD on Srinakarin in Bangkok.

Hi Thanks for that but a web search for the phone number or address yielded no results, obviously me going to Srinakarin would only result in me being very lost!! Could I bother you for a telephone number...also do they do ECU upgrades?? Thanks for your help in advance.

902 Srinakarin Road- 02-362-5078. Yes they do ECU upgrades. Easiest way to find it is to head down Sukhumvit, turn left onto soi 77 (Onnut) and turn left at Srinakarin. TRD is about a mile down on the left, set back from the road in a small row of shophouses.

Chip tuning (ECU) on a petrol engine brings you absolutely nothing (aside from wasted baht).

Chip tuning on a diesel engine will in many cases drastically reduce the lifetime of your engine and/or transmission. Don't do it!

Guys Thanks for the help I will speak to them obviously I had assumed the simplest and usual first step to improve performance was the ECU then if you want to go further you look at other tweaks and the whole hog turbo supercharge etc....I am not after that just when I want to overtake I want to ''go'' if you know what I mean. The point about the ECU is interesting since most believe there is direct BHP improvement admittedly at the cost of fuel and engine wear..?

In hindsight the diesel with the band of torque solves that but mines a petrol Fortuner! Any one with other tips for improvements please let us know FYI the handling was improved just by adding 265/50 R20 the low profile stops the roll as you would expect. The shop also fitted a stronger spring to the drum brake mechanism on the rear which I was rather dubious about but it was free and it seems to have appeared to improve braking a little...! Next step will be discs to replace the drums on the rear and then shocks and springs any comments on that welcomed since there seems to be two camps on that topic...ie brakes are fine...not fine.

I'm puzzled as to why someone would say ECU tuning would simply be a waste of money. By 'chipping' a number of vehicles over the years, I'd often achieve both better performance {both on road & on track} whilst ironically improving fuel consumption {if I was less lead footed} in day to day usage.

Forgive the pun but guess: YMMV

Chip tuning on petrol non-turbo cars is pointless without other modifications to enhance performance. It's a sum of the parts modification.

On turbo diesel cars the boost to the turbo is increased along with the fuel mixture hence larger and noticable gains are possible. Without increasing the turbo's work rate such gains are just not physically possible on the standard engine.

Depending on the programming there usually are drawbacks such as shortening engine life (especially that of the turbo) and increased lag at lower revs.

There's a lot of misinformation about piggyback ECU's on this forum so be careful not to believe everything you read.

Forget about chipping the petrol Fortuner for the moment and think about adding a turbo and s/s exhaust system. Turbos are relatively cheap in Thailand and a lot of places will be able to fit them. The best way to get big gains for low cost is to improve the airflow into, and out of your engine IMO. You can run it at low boost and see gains of 30 to 50BHP.

Forget chipping your engine, as it's money better spent elsewhere.

Thank you for the sound advice! I have contacted Arto TRD and they are emailing me details on what they can do. I found this site [a Fortuner club in Phillipines] explains about the diesel side supporting the comment on engine wear and damage possible, however nil on petrol but your comments above make sense for petrol see lnik for diesel article: http://pinoyfortuner.14.forumer.com/viewto...d0988b8b1c6c63c

If anyone has details for turbo improvements please let us know since TRD is apparently the most expensive.

Mea Culpa, on the the turbo point. However, I would say that ECU programming can improve aspects of the vehicle even in the non turbo environment, mainly since the stock map fitness function is more conservative than can be achieved. Though there is an argument that by going outside the standard parameters one can engender long term problems.

Quick update ...I went to the TRD workshop to see a petrol Fortuner having the full tune turbo, brakes, shocks etc a tidy job on the turbo which they have done a couple of times on Fortuners...they will check it out on the rolling road next week to see what has been achieved. Anyone interested let me know. A nice job squeezing the turbo and intercooler in and adding the air scoop like the diesel version. Some other minor modifications are needed.

I also obtained another contact for tuning the petrol Fortuner, if anyone needs this also post me. Thanks for everyones help.
