Hi-

I want my sister to send me 2 pairs of hair straightners over to Thailand from the UK, each pair retails at about 150 GBP and are almost unavailable in Thailand or at a massively inflated cost, they are brand new and still in the boxes.

I want to give them as gifts to my friends (twins) for birthday presents at the end of the month.

Now the questions i have are concerning import tax/duty, what is the best way to send the items here to avoid paying anything? Should i have the package marked as 'gift' and at a low value? Who is the best company to mail them through, and does anyone have any experience, good or bad in a simmilar situation?

I want to keep the gifts un-opened and in the original packaging.

Thank's for any advice offered

Chloe.

Slightly misleading post heading Chloe.

Perhaps it should (more accurately) read "How to Evade Paying any Duty".

Let send in 2 different parcel with 1 week difference and declared as Gift. So shouldn't be any problem.

Cheers.

Well I will be going to the UK and back in the next couple of months, they can travel in my bag if collection is easily arranged.

I have brought all sorts of things into Thailand over time (you would be surprised :o ) A couple of haircurler thingys should not be a problem. No Tax :D

Just have them sent by normal airmail. Theres a good chance they won't be stopped by customs unless the packaging is very large. You could also try sending them individually. I've had plenty of inward parcels sent to Thailand and only very occassionally have I received a card in the mail requesting import duty, and incidently, these have been for larger packages.

Send regular Post Airmail and mark as gift. Your sister will probably have to affix a value to the "gift". A small package that size, $20 it should sail right though.

I sent my little girl a package every 2-3 weeks with hundreds of dollars worth of her favorite clothes/food/stuff.

One out of a dozen, has been stopped by postal authorities who wanted to see what was inside (1. to see if it matched the customs slip and 2. to see if there was anything worth pinching in the future since they saw these pacakges frequently.) Even the one that was opened wasn't questioned (and the contents were much dear than claimed).

The postal authorities, if they check at all, will use a local cost estimate with which to judge it. Since I bought my little girl (beutiful curly hair---that she hates) such a hair straightner at Pantip costs about 200 Baht, ~6 USD at todays rate.
