The Most Intrusive Web Page Technology

Featured Replies

The Bangkok Post has begun to embed "ContentLink" advertising into their web pages.. You know... just pass your mouse over one of their "DOUBLE-Underlined" links (you don't have to click on it) and then a small window pops up... blocking the view of a portion of the page, and it won't close until you click on the little (x).

Does anything bug you more???

Now, I'm stuck reading the Nation website with their unreadable, newly designed Home Page.

And the decline continues!!!!

I haven't seen an advert on a Web page in years, as I use AdMuncher, plus associated other Browser based Ad & Pop-Up Blockers...

But even though they seem to block the actual ad content from being called up by "ContentLink".. (the small pop-up windows always seems to be "Loading" but I never actually see any content... ) Ad and Pop-Up Blockers don't block the small window, as these are Server side embedded links in the HTML code (I think).. so a simple mouse over calls up the Basic "ContentLink" window.. even if the actual advert is blocked.

Go to the Bangkok Post and look at one of their Story pages.. Not too many "ContentLinks" on the Homepage.. Does FireFox block them for you?

I actually DON'T like Firefox.. I like my browsers to be intuitive and Add-Ons to be included.. I hate having to search for them and waste all my time trying to install them. Besides, I don't find Firefox to be that much better to use than IE.. actually harder to manipulate.

My Preferred Browser is Maxthon... then IE7... after that it's a toss-up between Opera and Firefox. (BTW.. Maxthon uses ADBlocker, same as Firefox)

Besides... Like Steve Jobs, FireFox wants to take over the world.. and when it does, then it too will become a Target for the "Dark Side".

Some "content links" on Bangkok Post are funny. The first one I saw was for "army" - buy, sell, find cheapest prices. Links for "parlament" might actually be useful - there were reports of 30 millions offered to prospecitve MPs, maybe there are cheaper deals on the Internet.

>>>

I think these links call for jvascript, you can't disable them at IP level. I know in Opera it's possible to load your own javascript file for any specific website, I will look into it.

Admuncher, if I remember correctly, can disable certain scripts, too, but it isn't free.

I have an "Un-Upgradeable" :o version of AdMuncher.. But I can probably still disable scripts.

I just hate Intrusive technologies like that.

I complained to the WebMaster at Bangkok Post.. Answer was..

Paraphrased In My Own Words...

:D "Bite Me" :D

You should be able to define the offending script as a blockable item. Interestingly enough with AdBlock Plus on Firefox I've never see these links, but with IE7 I do.

Regards

Can someone give a link to a page with these scripts? I can't seem to find them in today's Post articles.

Because of the way the script works, and in my case the pop-up windows times out fairly quickly once focus is lost on it I can't 'Snag-it, however this link viewed in E7 shows the activity. For example Broadcasting which is double underlined.

Regards

ok, I got it.

In Opera's blocked content add kona.kontera.com/*, similar blocks should work with FF add ons or admuncher.

There's no need to disable scripts themselves - just don't load them from that website.

AdBlock Plus has kontera in the default subscription, hence why I never see it in FF.

Firefox with AdBlock Plus and NoScript addons installed. All annoyances just melted away and peace reigned throughout the galaxy.

I did it the day BangkokPost enabled ContentLink. I wouldn't be able to continue reading their page otherwise.

Now, I can not only read the BKK Post the way it was meant to be, but I can also individually turn off JavaScript on a site by site basis. I'm glad they finally did something so annoying that I had to figure out how to block it. NoScript is a great tool. They did me a service.

Finally got it working in AdMuncher.. Need to "Remove Scripts with Text" in My Filters.

Other Blocks didn't work

Thanks for the Help.

Now I can "Enjoy" the Bangkok Post again... :o:D:D
