I can't find the previous thread.

Having just read the thread on Balti Indian dishes in the Best/Worst Eateries, I was reminded of Salman Rushdie's book 'Shalimar the Clown'.

If you can read Rushdie, who is a little difficult when you start, then this is a very good account of the Kashmir war at the time of independence of India and Pakistan.

Midnight's Children was another good read of his, about childhood in Bombay.

Satanic Verses I read when it first came out in the Eighties, but lost my copy in Libya. Another good read - but he sure didn't like Khomeini.
