Electricity Price Increase?

Hi, I just moved to Patong, and would greatly appreciate if you can help me clear some misunderstanding. I am renting a room in paradise complex from a friend and he has just install an electric meter for my usage only. It's a single phase type DD28, kilowatt- hr meter. My meter reading was 125 and he multiplied it by 15 baht so it comes to 1,875. I am totally puzzled as I have read in this forum that the rate is between 3 to 5 baht.. Am I reading it totally wrong? The thing is, he is a good friend of mine, and I can't really ask to see the bill. He just wrote me a receipt for the total amount. I just want to reassure myself that he is not ripping me off. Many thanks in advance for your helpCheers

I've just looked at my EXCEL spread sheet for electric bills since 1998. Over the years electric has actually gone down to it's lowest in Sept 1999, and up too it's highest in Sept 2006. Right now 2008 it's dropped back down and is only 68 Satang more than 10 years ago.

Speaking with my landlord hat on we charged our rentors 4 Baht/unit in 1998, increased to 5 Baht/unit in October 2000. And we have not increased our rate these past 8 years.

So by my figures electric has increased something like 25% over 10 years .... that's not so bad ....

Well someone is increasing the price by a lot. It may be the complex or your friend. I have my November bill in front of me. I used a total of 426 KWH. Total on my bill is ฿1565.95. Plus ฿10.00 to pay the bill at 7-11. So total out of pocket ฿1576÷426=3.7 per KWH, including tax and everything. And that's in a 2 bedroom house...

If he installed the meter then it's considered a private meter and he can charge what he wants. Usually most landlords charge about 5 Baht. He is ripping you off at 15 Baht for just electric, but maybe the 15 Baht includes some other services.

What are the approximate costs for running a medium sized swimming pool?

50m3 water filtered/circulated twice a day, approx 300-350Kwh a month. So it depends on your electric unit price how much in baht

ad costs of chemicals, broke pumps and parts, approx 1.000 baht/month

I suppose it depend what medium size is in cubic meters. I would say that 1,000 baht/month for a 50 m3 pool is on the light side, more like 1,500 baht/month + a lot of time if you service the pool yourself.

50m3 I d say is 1000-1500 baht/month for electricity alone, then ad 1000 baht for chemicals and/or parts, then ad time to keep it clean and water balanced, or ad 2-3k baht a month to have someone do it

I am sure someone with a saltwaterchlorinator will come on board and say chemicals cost very little, and thats correct until you realise the chlorinator only lives for a few years

as for size, 3,5 x 8 x 1,5 meters like one of Navindas fiberpools are approx 42m3, doesnt reduce much from above 50m3 calculations

Oops sorry, I did not read your costs the correct way. Though you meant just 1,000 baht/month. Yes, 1,500 baht/month for electric + 1,000 baht combined chemical repair cost sounds just right based on my own pool costs pro rated for a 50 m3 pool.

Cheers, it started when he considered charging me 100 baht per day for using the air con as too cheap for the length of time I usually have it on each day. So he decided to install the meter as a more accurate means of assessing the cost of using the air con. As far as I know that is it, of course it includes fan, tv and fridge. The irony is that the installation of the meter coincides with the low humidity we are having in the month of November and I have been using probably a quarter of the air con than what I have been using when I was here in June. The thing that puzzles me is where he got 15 baht?? It's inconceivable to think that he is ripping me off and yet what are the alternative reasons. I can't see how I am going to solve this conundrum short of asking to see the actual bill and that will be the the end of our friendship!

100 baht/day would cover the cost of running your aircon 24 hours/day at 18 degC. A more realistic cost for aircon while sleeping, fridge, TV, lights would be 50 baht/day (based on a 5 baht/unit price)

The main problem here is that we, and I presume neither do you, know what he is being charged for electricity himself. In condo's that can be really over the top. So he may be ripping you of, I guess he probably is, but the only way to be sure is by asking him for his electricity bill and make a calculation yourself.

I was using the air con for about 19 hours a day at around 24 degree C when he started complaining that he would have to charge me more than 100 baht a day for the air con. I am paying 5,000 baht a month for rent for the so called fan room, and the 100 baht extra a day was ONLY for the air con. The 125 units was for a period of 17 days when I was averaging 6 hours a day of air con at 26degree C. My room is pretty basic, measuring approximately 12ft by 18ft with a separate bathroom, a double bed, small wardrobe, fridge and a small tv. It's in the pedestrianised section aproaching Royal Paradise hotel where there is a dolphin designed fountain, so I consider the area nice and fairly quiet for somewhere so central and convenient as I don't drive. Is it possible to find anything comparable given that I have to pay such a high rate for my electricity here? Many thanks for your input much appreciated

Yes, that is the problem, and it didn't help when he didn't show me the bill, I presume he must get a separate bill for my meter. I just can't bring myself to think the unthinkable, that a good friend would do such a thing, especially when 5 baht per kilowatt is consider ok, but 15 baht! I can't see how to ask to see the bill without the inference that I don't trust him, and that will be the end of our friendship. I am in the pedestrianised street of the Paradise complex, the grand approach to Royal Paradise hotel where there is a dolphin designed fountain, so I suppose it could be considered a nice area, but the shop houses can't really be compared to a top end condo. Incidentally I was looking at service rental, and at Patong Towers, which I presume is quite upmarket, they are charging on top of the rent, 8 baht per kilowatt for electricity.

So why don't ask him: hey, there and there they're charging 8 Baht per unit, how come it is 15 Baht here?

If he is insulted by the questions because he is ripping you off, so be it. If he is insulted because he is actually being charged 15 Baht per unit himself, it would be easy to point out that he is payi9ng way over the top, hence your question. That should be something one can explain.

Huh, I think I said that in my post which was about ten posts ago. We know what the basic rate charge is, but in a complex it will be higher. How much higher only the management and your dear friend knows. So ask them...

When we bought the house the salt water chlorinator was not working 6 years old

Replacement cost quoted for the pool size 60K baht

Changed back to fresh water much cheaper and i clean the pool myself, good exercise

Paid 3300 baht for the last 50KG drum of chlorine
