Picking Up Your Second Hand Car.

Featured Replies

OK all,

Tommorow I am going to pick up my new (second hand car).

In my homecountry all 2nd hand cars are tested and get a full check up before they can sell.

If any defects the selling party has to pay for it.

Now this is not how it works in Thailand.

You can do a full check of the car after you signed all documents and pay the deposit.

What I have to write down, say or agree that the selling party will be responsible for any current defects?

Your advice is very much appreciated!

Alex

If you sign something equal to or resembling "As Is", you're on your own once you sign and pay the deposit. I'd be wary about paying ANYTHING before you know what you're dealing with. Granted, even an experienced mechanic may not spot all troubles or potential troubles in a secondhand car, but I'd have it put up on a lift and checked from front to rear. A trustworthy mechanic should help you make the right decision. Obviously you want to test drive the car with your mechanic so he can listen, feel and smell any trouble the car might have. Like in the USA, drivers here often run their vehicles into the ground before selling them. It may take a couple hours to evaluate a used vehicle, but it would be worth it. It's your money!
