Immigration should give a 7 day extension if you show them your flight ticket.

How much does i tcost you to go to Chong Mek?  Lao Visa On Arrival at $35 is about baht 1,200, and chop back in to Thailand for 30 days on a Visa Exempt basis.  Compare

 to the extension

of your present visa at Thai Immigration for baht 1,900.

Not that I want to deprive Thai Immigration of their wee bit of baht, but by doing a border run you could BUY more goodies to take back to the UK, like some good Beer Lao.

I thought that you were allowed to overstay for 1 day just because of problems like these, I couldn't get a flight either once until the day after my visa expired. I just said that I was sorry that I couldn't get a flight for the right day and the guy at the counter had already stamped me out before I could even explain. I don't think they care about 1 day but that's only my opinion, no doubt other posters will hammer you about being picked up by the Police etc lol, but I think you will find that 1 day is an acceptable situation.

Edit : But yes, If you want to stay 100% legal simply get a 7 day extension from the Imm office.

I believe the one day overstay without having to pay a fine is more for the people that show up at immigration at 23:00 for a 01:00 flight the next day. Their permission to stay expires after they go through immigration but before the plane leaves.

If you leave by air you will not be charged if you only have one day of overstay. If you have two you will be charged for both. Any overstay is subject to police action so it is best to avoid.

I had 971 days of overstay 3 years ago.. Got 20.000baht poorer at the airport but with the one biggest reliefs of my live!!!

Dont do crime if u cant do the time.. And overstay is a crime..!!

I was lucky..very lucky.. got busted by the police in Bkk when I had maybe 1 year of overstay!! But my nice wife got me out of the cell,,,without showing my passport!! TIT

Cheers..

Yes, theoretically. In practise they might just over look it or fine the 500 baht or what ever it is and stamp that on the passport (shouldn't cause any problems in the future). Or go extend for ridiculous 1900 baht at the immigration at the immigration and waste hours of your day. Best option would be to check in the day visa expires but I don't think it's an option in this case.

Even if he checked in while his entry was still permitted, if his plane was leaving after that, he might still be stamped with an overstay, just not charged.

Other people have reported that this happened to them. Not sure if it is the rule, or if it is just what some of the immigration officers are doing.
