In a few months, I will be applying for my first 1 year extension of my visa. Some questions have come up that I have not been able to find answers for. First, I have read that it can take up to 30 days to get the extension. I work in Japan and I am only in Thailand 10 - 12 days at a time before having to return to work. Is there a quicker option to get the extension done than the normal 30 days? Also, all of my income is earned from outside of Thailand. Am I correct in my understanding that all I need is a letter from my embassy certifying my income? Is money requirement 40,000B per month OR 400,000B in a bank account? Last, are there any Thai income tax forms required for the extension?

Assume you are talking about extension based on Thai Wife.

You submit your application and get a 30 days under consideration stamp. You go back in 30days and hopefully get the full year.

The requirement is 40,000 Baht a month income. You need a letter from your Embassy as proof. No tax payment in Thailand is needed if your income is from outside.

A load of other stuff is needed including You and your Wife being interviewed plus photos of both of you in and around your home as proof that you do actually live together.

Sorry but I can't really understand why you're extending a 1 year visa if you're only resident in Thailand for a 10-12 days at a time. If granted, it would also then be necessary to apply for a re-entry permit every time you leave to go back to Japan. At 1,900 Baht a time, seems a waste of money to me.

Hi JMR

I have just done this too, so I will tell you what I know and I'm sure one of the TV experts will 'fill in the gaps'

You can apply for an extension to your visa, NO MORE than 30 days before expiry. I have done this and visited the KapChoeng office a week or so before that time, to ensure I had all the necessary documents etc. When I next called, they(Immigration)kept most of the paperwork and stamped my passport with a 'consideration of stay' stamp with a requirement to call back in a further 30days. At that point, they will then stamp a years 'extention' HOPEFULLY!! They also staple a paper slip to you passport telling you the date of your first/next 90 report visit to Immigration. You say your income is earned outside thailand and as long as the country has a 'double taxation treaty' you should not be involved with Thai Tax. As you suggest a certificate of Income letter from your embassy will be required by Immigration. As you mention 40,000b a month, I assume you are getting an extensionThailand due to marriage to a Thai citizen,if so, this figure is correct for this type of extensionextension and can be income from you, your partner or joint income. The money in the bank option no longer applies to new applicants.

Hope this helps & good luck

Dave

If you are traveling for work you are probably better to have multi entry non immigrant O visa. Make a quick trip to Singapore with proof of 400k in a bank account anywhere and your marriage certificate/copy of spouse ID card. This allows up to 90 day stay on unlimited number of entries for a period of one year from date of issue.

For extension of stay you must be here 30 days later (and it can very) so would be very hard to be sure. You would also have to obtain a re-entry permit after you apply (for that trip) and after approved you would need a multi re-entry permit (1k + 3.8K+ 1.9K extension application). The money requirement is 40k per month as per your Embassy letter.

I seem to have confused myself now. First, yes it is a Non-O based on marriage. I was under the belief that I have two options when my visa expires. 1. Return home and apply for another 1 year multiple entry Non-O or 2. Apply for an extension of my current visa in Thailand. Am I misunderstanding exactly what the extension is? I assumed that if I apply for an extension based on my marriage, then my 1 year Non-O visa will be good for another year and as long as I get a multiple re-entry permit, I can come and go as I please.

Currently i dont really "need" the visa as I am only in the Kingdom about 60-80 days per 6 months. However, when we have kids, I will change to work part time and will be in Thailand 15-20 days per month. Also, I would eventually like to apply for Permentant Residency at some point in the furture.

Would it be possible to apply and get the 30 day consideration stamp, leave the country for work, then on my return, go back and get the year extention stamped in if approved. I can change my schedule as necessary to be at the immigration office when they tell me to.

You will have to change your schedule to do so. After application for extension of stay you receive a 30 day permitted to stay stamp. You must obtain a re-entry permit to keep that alive and be back on that date to obtain the one year stamp. Once you have the one year stamp you must obtain a multi re-entry permit to keep that alive for your travel. As there have been cases where it has taken longer than 30 days and the fact this same procedure must be done each and every year it would not be the best procedure for most people. If you plan to apply for PR you will have to do it however as more than 3 years in that status is required. But the chance of PR without local tax payment is slight so you should read the pinned item on PR linked to at top of forum under useful information carefully.

You do not have to return to your home country to obtain a new multi entry non immigrant O visa. Singapore will issue with 400k in any bank and Penang will likely issue with 400k in Thai account and KL might issue without. There are a number of other Consulates that will also issue with or without financial information.

How long does it typically take the Thai Embassy to issue a visa in Singapore? I am there a few days a month but never more than 2 days at a time. If it is done the same day as application, that might be my best option...

Apply in the morning. Pick Up the next day in the afternoon.
