A dramatic chase ends in a stunning arrest as Thai immigration officers apprehend a British national accused of a daring iPhone theft from a Congolese tourist in Bangkok.

The suspect, identified as Mr. Khan, 29, was nabbed in a Surat Thani hotel, suspected of planning to flee to the tourist haven of Koh Samui or Phangan. Authorities reveal that the alleged thief had been overstaying his visa for nearly two years.

Acting on orders from top immigration officers, a team swooped in on Mr. Khan, known for his distinctive hip-hop hairstyle, at a hotel on Na Meuang Street, reported Daily News.

The dramatic apprehension came after Mr. Khan reportedly assaulted a tourist in Phra Khanong, making off with their prized smartphone. This audacious act marked the climax of nearly two years of unlawful residence in Thailand, with the original entry dating back to mid-2023.

Investigations reveal Mr. Khan had initially entered the country on a tourist visa but failed to exit upon its expiry, thus breaching immigration laws. His arrest highlights the severity of unlawful overstays, compounded by a high-profile theft.

Coordination is now underway, with local law enforcement in Surat Thani set to transfer Mr. Khan to face charges in Bangkok.

Metropolitan police in Phra Khanong have issued a hold request, ensuring Mr. Khan remains in custody to face robbery charges.

The saga underscores the vigilance of Thai authorities in tracking down offenders flouting immigration rules and committing crimes while overstaying. The incident further highlights the necessity for stringent visa compliance among foreign tourists.

Mr. Khan’s attempted evasion and subsequent capture demonstrate the capabilities of Thai immigration enforcement in dealing with international offenders.

As the legal process unfolds, attention remains on the repercussions for foreign nationals involved in serious unlawful activities while in Thailand.

If he hadn't caused a scene , he wouldn''t have been caught.

If people didn't grass a lot of over stayers would still be here.

They certainly like to give immigration credit when it isn't due.

Nope, Singh. Khan translates to king, a devout Sikh would have a problem with that.

On someone of South Asian heritage?

Probably corn rows or braided "dreads".

In either case, worthy of a doubling of the sentence.

Especially since he has chips on both shoulders about crime statistics and poor levels of education.
