Finally, this just in from from the B Post though there is scant mention of details-

like possible cause of death.

The Nation has deleted their page

My thoughts and condolences to the family or friends who may indeed read this forum but I have to say, ( as this is a discussion forum)

I think it may be time to suggest this was hate crime directed solely at Ms. Backluns (sic?) because she was a woman.

(BangkokPost.com) - Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat has arrived in Phuket to inspect the scene of the murder of a Swedish female tourist on Mai Khao beach on Sunday night.

The deputy governor of Phuket province, Worapot Rattasima, said initial reports point to the murderer being a local who lives near the crime scene. Police are treating this as a very serious case and are doing all they can to track down the murderer.

The dead victim has been identified by police as 27-year-old Hannah Charlotte Bankluns.

Tourism minister visits Phuket to speed up probe into Swedish tourist murder

And this just in from The Nation

Is there anyone who knows the correct spelling of her name?

Phukette Gazette is reporting it as Hanna Backlund

Phuket - Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat visited Phuket late Sunday night to ask police to speed up probe into the murder of a tourist on a popular beach of this island province.

Weerasak arrived at the Phuket International Airport at 11:55 pm to find out the progress of the probe into the murder of Charotta Hanna, 27.

Weerasak asked police to brief him the details of the beach and the attack.

Phuket Police chief Pol Maj Gen Decha Butrnamphet reported to him that the Phuket Tourism Association offered Bt100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the murder.

Correction:

The Consulate in Phuket has her name spelled Hanna Backlund and the Gazette did get it right , my apologies . Additionally, her name has the 2 dots above the A in Backlund

[Do you think a permit is needed? This is really just a peace vigil, on a public space though ..

I am sending out memorial info right now to press right now..

Permit probably not needed ? But when ever organising any gathering of any kind it always pays to check with local authorities first, it is at least polite to inform Or-Bor-Tor or National Parks (Whoever responsible)

Regards, L.K.

P.S. Which makes me wonder if you have invited local politicians, police etc.

Hanna had a nice showing for her Phuket Memorial at the Mai Khao Bungalows one week after her murder.

The proprietor arranged a Buddhist ceremony with many monks and a donated recycled spirit house was erected on the edge of the property. Quite a few local women prepared their special dishes in a Thai version of a pot luck.

Slylia Jurich of the Phuket Swedish consulate attended and also surveyed the site of the attack. Aside from her about a dozen or so other westerners attended and the The Thai press was well represented as was the Phuket Gazette.

Hanna would have celebrated her 27th birthday on the 21st of March , the spring equinox according to Ms. Jurrch, and was studying engineering.

And from the Gazette...

http://www.phuketgazette.net/news/index.asp?id=6352

MAI KHAO: About 50 people gathered at Mai Khao Beach this morning to attend a memorial service for slain Swedish tourist Hanna Backlund, who would have been 27 yesterday.

Akkaradej “Chon” Tankae, 31, has confessed to stabbing Miss Backlund to death on the morning March 15, less than 500 meters from the Mai Khao Bungalows where she had been staying with a friend.

Akkaradej, arrested in Ranong on March 19 after several days on the run, told police he stabbed Miss Backlund multiple times after she fought back during his unsuccessful attempt to rape her.

The service, which started at 11am, was organized by Cherng Talay resident Christy Sweet.

“I am not connected to the case in any way, but thought that it was important to do something to mark the one week anniversary of Hanna Backlund’s death,” said Christy, a US citizen.

Mai Khao Bungalows owner Sawas Rakrangsimansuk invited six monks from two nearby temples to lead the prayers.

“The girls were staying in a tent because we had no vacant bungalows when they arrived. After a few days one became free, but they decided to stay in their tent because they enjoyed the location’s privacy. It is a very sad case, they were nice girls,” he said.

Also attending the service was Consul Silvia Jurich from the Swedish Consulate in Phuket.

“It is horrendous for a young woman to meet her death like this. It’s incredible that no one heard her screams. It just goes to show that you cannot just assume that you are safe,” said Miss Jurich before placing incense sticks before a spirit house set up on the beach for the service.
