Signs

Featured Replies

I find myself often reading various signs, whether it is store signs, posters, etc. and thought a fun exercise is posting photographs of some. This allows members to try and interpret the various, and often cryptic fonts. Also, in photo format, can't cut and paste into a translator. :o

Some basic rules I believe will be useful:

1. Let the new learners have a go at the translation before the language pros.

2. If an error in the translation, supply hints as to what is wrong so it will help the newbies work the problem out.

3. Post the roman transliteration of the sign rather then typing out in Thai.

4. Post the English translation.

My first sign, a simple one to start with.

My beginners guess is somthing like;

'Please help look after together, clean and tidy.'

Herbie.

A sign in English would probably read: Please help keep the area clean and tidy

I don't have a photo of the sign, but one I recently decyphered while in the bathroom of a nice hotel:

กรุณาอย่าทิ้งบุหรี่ในโถปัสสาวะ

Well my guess is 'Please don't throw your cigaretts in the urinal' but I had to look up โถปัสสาวะ, is this the word for urinal or toilet ?

Regards,

Herbie.

โถ means an earthenware pot or jar , ปัสสาวะ means urine , so urinal is correct.
