My Thai family and I are traveling to Bkk ACS next week to apply for our child's first US Social Security card, and I want some assurance that I have enough documentation.

The SSA list of required doc's is confusing where it says, "One document may be used to satisfy two requirements, but two documents are required." I believe this applies to my identity as the US citizen father, but it may apply to the child as well.

I have the following documents for the child: US Cert. of Citizenship from DHS, Thai passport, Thai adoption decree, and Thai birth certificate (all translated by DHS standards).

My sole document for identity is my passport, since my US driver's license expired long ago. If two documents are needed by me, should I bring a translation of my Thai driving license?

I will email this post to ACS Bangkok, but I'm wondering if anyone here has gone through the procedure and can advise.

For child's Social Security number...

Child's presence

Thai passport (or other photo ID)

Birth certificate

Adoption decree

Proof of US citizenship

(For SSA purposes, the child is the "Applicant")

For applicant's parents...

Parents' presence

US passport -- US citizen parent

Thai ID card or photo ID -- non-citizen parent

Original documents must be presented.

Making your own copies beforehand will save time.

These will be certified at no charge for mailing to VARO, Manila (SSA).

Translation of Thai documents need not be verified by Thai For. Min.

SS number will be mailed in 6-10 weeks.

Additional requirements for child's US passport...

Same as all above

Cash is best, no personal checks

Passport can be picked up in 2 weeks, or mailed via EMS envelope purchased from postoffice just outside ACS
