Hi all,

I would like to bring some gold to the US.

I asked about this before, and was told, that jewelry is probably ok to wear and not have to worry about declaring it.

I was thinking about bringing some small gold bars, since they are cheaper to buy.

It would be less than 20 baht.

Can I bring these in without paying duty?

And if not about what % would I need to pay?

Thanks.

My experience with US Customs is that it is best to always declare EVERYTHING you bought overseas, including socks and underwear. You must declare the jewelry. I don't know current duties, but they would I think be minimal as long as you've declared everything.

Incidentally, I once knew two people, Americans --husband and wife both in their sixties-- who brought a heavy gold necklace from Saudi Arabia into Hawaii without declaring it. The necklace was discovered, both individuals were strip-searched, a 10,000 dollar fine was imposed PLUS one night in jail. It might behoove you to declare the gold.

Thanks Chevy,

I guess I won't try to sneak anything in.

But, I don't want to pay hundreds in duties.

anyone know how the amount of duty is determined?

Or how I can get the Info?

Thanks.

I brought much gold and silver jewelry into the USA before, declared everything every time, and paid a relative pittance in terms of duties. But this was some years ago.

Now here's the trick question: Do the American or Thai governments post current (and updated) duty information on the Internet concerning gold, silver, platinum jewelry, with or without mounted gemstones? I suspect NO. The collection of import-duty revenue on such items would appear to be arbitrary.
