Park ranger, police shot dead by illegal loggers

Tak - A park ranger and policeman were shot dead by illegal loggers in this northern province Sunday morning, police said.

Wiroj Chuakhaopim, chief of Park Ranger Unit of Klong Wang Chao National Park, was shot dead on his way to the unit head office at 7 am.

Park rangers at the office sought help from police to retrieve Wiroj's body.

But while police were arriving at the crime scene, the poachers fired at police, leading to a gunfight for about ten minutes.

Police Cpl Anusorn Tuina died at the scene while Pol Cpl Pisit Phu-im and Pol Sgt Maj Nongprom Saenwong were severely injured.

Illegal logging of public and private land in Thailand is getting totally out of hand. Logging gangs are very active now, including here in Roi-Et Province. The police mentioned in the article above should be commended/decorated for having done their job. If poachers such as these were shot on sight, illegal logging would slow immensely.
