In the uk, we had something called 'rooting powder' a hormone, whereby one stuck a bit of a plant/tree in it and then put it in the ground and waited for it to grow into another plant/tree.

My knowledge of cuttings extends only to putting a bit of plant into a glass of water and hoping that it will sprout roots. Sometimes it does, but no success as yet with tree branches/twigs. Tried a few times, and nothing. Just a rotted stump. Also tried just sticking a twig in the ground, but that soon expired also.

How to do please? I have some very nice flowering trees I would like to replicate. Thankyou for your advice :o

It all depends on the tree you are trying to propagate. Some trees propagate from a hard wood cutting, some from soft. What trees are you trying to grow?

However, one way to grow is to find a sturdy looking branch, and close to where it forks off, peel back the bark to the white layer all the way around the branch. Get some coconut husk, shred it, then wrap it around the peeled area. Tie it to the branch and then wrap a plastic bag around the coconut husk leaving some open to add water. Water this regularly and it *should* grow roots eventually. When the roots are long, cut between the fork and the plastic bag, cut off the plastic bag but leave the coconut husk on. Then plant the whole thing in a pot with some good potting soil and water regularly until it starts to grow.

If you need a pic, let me know.
