wondering,

starting to really get sticky here in samui,

is the humidity less in udon area during April?

i remember Nong khai as being fabulous in January a few years ago.

or do you need elevation like in Chiang Rai?

i might have to run away north.

You have to take this with a grain of salt. My Thai wife knows EVERYTHING ! I had considered living in Nong Kai but my wife says it is WAY too hot and humid during the summer. We live at 1,000 feet elevation in Loei province. Maybe she was right?

Humidity typically decreases with distance from the sea (or any other large body of water). The air mass passes over land and gradually dries out. Dry air gains heat and loses heat more quickly than moist air. This is basically why in coastal areas the day time highs are lower, and the night time lows are higher, whereas inland the temperature soars in the day and plummets at night.
