Video (dvd) Re-encoding

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I need a program/utility that will take a DVD format video and convert it to a .avi file or similar. Preferably something free :o

I have a number of DVD's that i would love to copy to my PC and then stream across to my XBox... yes i know the XBox can play the DVD's straight but thats not the point :D

Any suggestions? link?

thanks in advance!

the free version of fairusewizard will rip to a max file size of 700meg( xvid ) - 10 euros for the full version will allow any size

I use Auto Gordian Knot, free and easy to use. You can specify the size of the avi file; uses XviD out of the box.

This assume that you have VOBs, that is, have already decrypted the DVD if applicable.

Subtitles can be grabbed off VOBs using Subtitle Workshop or SubRip.

All are free.

Before our over-zealous moderator locks this thread, it is legal to back-up DVD's which you purchased.

I use iSofter DVD Platinum www.softer.com

It works very well.

I use the .avi(Xvid) option for good compression and retaining quality.

They might be home video DVDs. :o

2nd that, I find it the best when coding AV.

Edit.....

And if at a later date you decide to rip the titles from your "home movie" "CloneDVD2" works fantastic :D

Also if a friend gives you a home movie, that he protected, with his permision you can un protect it, but guess you should PM me about that :D:o:D

@ lomatopo, autoknot works on far more than just "VOB"s, but I guess you already know that, but for the sake of keeping your post short you didn't mention it...?
