I read with interest some article regarding the possibility of legalising casino's in the LOS. I thought it was unlikely, but at a meeting with two Australian businessmen today I was told that it is going to happen! Could this be the straw that breaks the camels back? If you think petty crime is rife now, what will happen when the gambling mad Thai population loses their shirt at a legal casino inside Thailand? I share my time between Thailand and Australia and occasionaly visit the Star City casino in Sydney, I can confidently tell you that the majority of the Asian punters hail from Thailand. I have many Thai friends and they all tell me that legal casinos will be the death of SANUK in the LOS.

I recently saw a program on the Chinese gamblers in Macau.

The missery of the poor Chinese families where the bread winner can't control their addiction. (So many of them. Asians have a huge gambling problem.)

The huge profits of the rich elite Chinese involved in owning the casinos.

The high rollers are often Chinese officials using government funds to spend $$$ millions.

Thailand will be farked if/when this happens...

Will be very bad for the LOS, I believe.

The worst thing that could happen to pattaya.The increase of crime over the last 2 years will continue, with more attacks on thai and farang for jewlery and money.

Also the wrong type of tourist will come too.

Strange ain't it no many folks (including many Thais) that Casinos are legal in Laos. If they want to go 45km outside Vientiane to the Dansavannah resort they will find a 24hours casino and I believe the 5* resort currently be developed in Savannahkhet will also have 24 hours Casino.

The existing on doesn't have any restrictions on Nationalities allowed to bet - so I don't see why the new one will either.

I know of a couple of folks who have literally gambled there house away . .. . I like the odd game of roulette I can spend many a fun hour at the tables but I certainly know when walk and what my limits are.

If you are in control casinos are a fun night out - but if not then they can be a nightmare the amounts of money I've seen people lose on one spin of the wheel has been amazing!

Edit: On the note of the Thailand legalising if they kept it sensible like Laos i.e. only at Resorts and outside of City centres, it would make a difference.

I think it was suggested that they be resticted to resort casinos and that only foreign nationals be allowed to enter.

This would help to eradicate the issue of the Thai people developing addictions and also deal with the Buddhist issues.

Good idea IMHO as the income generated in places like Macau is huge and cannot be ignored by the Thai government.

Welcome to Thailand - please leave all your money and then return home to make some more - then you will be welcomed back.

I would have thought that the visa on arrival would replace the 30 day visa exemption for some nationals, the duration of your visa stamp being based on the money that you are bringing into the nation, say 3,000 Baht per day?

Well if it comes you can look to pay 4 times more for every thing. There will be more demand the days of living cheap in LOS is fast coming to a end.

The casinos in the Philippines are open to all comers regardless of nationality. The only restriction is a 100 peso entrance tax which is now rarely enforced.

too much money leaving thailand and going to casinos in los and cambodia..just to put casinos in thailand and not letting thais gamble there ..will not solve the problem or fair to thais.

Thais are part-owners in most Cambodian casinos, and some in Laos and Burma as well.

If anything, the ISPs are about to get going again and start blocking more sites. I hope this isn't true but that's the word currently.
