My 5 year old laptop is dying a slow death. (Many verticle lines on the screen). I saw an ASUS laptop in Carre Four for 15000 baht with decent specs but no operating system. My question is can I make a copy of my legal Win Xp from my old computer and load it on to the new one? Conversely does anyone know how to fix the lines on my screen, about 1 pixel wide, started with 5 or 6 now have 20 or more. Screen is viewable but I'm afraid it will quit all together soon.. I have a second monitor and use extended desk top with no problems on the second screen.

Thanks P

I am not sure of the legalities with this..but I was told if you load the software onto a new computer and you may need to get hold of an original disk, that you can call to Microsoft and tell them that the computer has just returned from your technician and he has replaced the motherboard and hard disk..

They should then and this has worked for me, give you another code, however i do have the original licence..you will need to load it and then try to update the software,at that point it will tell you its already been registered, then there is a nice free phone number...

Like I said, not sure on the legalities, but surely you own the licence which should allow you to port that to any computer?

Try above, also if you are able to make a backup of the system registration files (floppy disk or Cd etc.) you might be able to build a fresh XP system using a copy from Tukcom etc. then make it legal with your registration files as a restore. This is not something I have done but read up for a similar situation I faced two years ago. Not sure if XP has the same limitation but Vista only allows one back up to be made. Best of luck.
