This is the third day our 9-month old dog hasn't eaten of what we suspect is due to Parvo. We took her to the vet yesterday where she got 3 shots of medicines (the one who brought her forgot to ask what medicines). She did not have any anti-Parvo shot as we just rescued her from the streets when she was 3-4 months old.

She is still alert altho a bit weak. I tried force feeding her with rehydration liquid but she wouldnt even swallow. Is there anything else we can do?

Kindly PM me as this is rather urgent. Thanks.

under the skin liquids or in the vein (faster and easier in this case; the vet can put a catheter opening in the vein and cap it and u can hook her up to salin for the amount the vet tells u); u can give under the skin with a large syringe (50 cc) and 18 guage needle, tent up her skin, and slide needle at angle into the 'tent', not into her muscle. then push in the fluids. 50 ml each in a different spot. withdraw needle and massage the area a bit. the water will absorb slowly: again, amount is dependant on what vet says (size and weight of dog). 200 ml at any given time might be ok...

only supportive therapy, if htey make it past the third day, then they may make it;

u cannot give a dog with parvo liquid by mouth as they just throw it up and their intenstines are not able to absorb much anyway;

she should have gotten pramin (against vomiting), some antibiotics for good measure probably gentamicin, and also should get flagyl oral once she's on the mend...

also possibly some worm medicine

prognosis is never good; its the main killer that can be prevented just by being vaccinated. my dog pulled thru but have seen most not make it..

because she is older she might. if she is a larger dog also better chances. small breeds dont hold up well.

if and when she starts to feel better, u can start giving her liquid soup with small pieces of cooked chicken breast in it. and rice .

in parvo, the innards of the intenstines get destroyed and they vomit and have diahrrea with blood, and cause damamge to their system.

just treated a boxer/amstaff pup for a week!!, he pulled thru.

weigh her every day to see if she is losing or gaining grams (that shows amount of hydration/dehydration)...

not much else u can do for her.

once she is on the mend, vaccinate her for the other stuff (she will be resistant to parvo though.)

so stupid, i forgot to ask why do u think its parvo if she's just not eating? just not eating could be other things. parvo is very identifiable with bloody stool and vomit and they usually really stink from the diahhrea it has a specific smell.

Ditto Bina..

IV with fluid + antibiotic and vitamin supplements are necessary in this case.

However, your dog may suffer from other diseases as worm, food poisoning or coccidiosis.

For viral enteritis, dogs will vomit for first few days and anorexia. After that dogs will have bloody diarrhea( reddish to brown as coke-coloured) and foul smell (rotten seafood).

Mostly of dogs dead due to blood loss and electrolite imbalance.

you can also give vitamin k injections which will stop the bleeding inside as a supportive...

give some honey or nutrigel in the mouth to absorb there for extra energy.

most important the fluid support!

good luck!

Just two or three motnhs ago had a (fully vaccinated!) dog with parvo. Tested positive for the test.

He didn't eat ,vomitted food and water out and had some bloody diarrhea.

Very important is the IV with elektrolites, as Bina and Bambina already said. This dog got it by vein for pretty much the whole day. He also got antibiotic injections every day and vitamin shots. Futhermore I gave him a herbal solution dropped on his gums every two hours until he started to eat by himself again, which was raw food as he absolutely refused to eat any kibble no matter with what I mixed it. He would lick the kibble perfectly clean but wouldn't eat it. He pulled through in less than a week.

hi bina and all,

sorry to bother you again but i tried contacting the vet today, unavailable and the secretary said to call in 30 minutes. when i did, several times, mysteriously the phone was off the hook. :-(

i only wanted to know what shots he gave and to ask where (part of the body) the needle should be inserted.

btw, i am not writing from thailand, but philippines.

anyway, the present situation is that bunny, the dog-patient ate a little (rice with some meat flavored soup), wags her tail but is now having difficulty getting up. :-(

the medicine he is supposed to drink or injected with is anti-bacterial, chloramphenicol (pamitate). is this enough?

he is now only 10 lbs., must have lost 5 lbs in the last 4 days. i am attaching a picture. bunny is the furry one, with her brother, bugs. part terrier, part native dog. they were rescued from the streets when they were 3 months or so.

so which part of the body do i inject this anti-bacterial? and do i need to also inject her with the rehydration fluid? do i need to use the tablets or i can make a solution at home?

hope my questions are not stupid. really clueless about this.

thanks in advance.

not sure what u want to inject?

saline IV solotion u just inject with a large syringe under the skin, usually scruff of the neck or on the side where there is loose skin so u can pull it up to make a sort of tent to place the needle under the skin but not in the muscle.

as for antibiotics, not sure what u were given. pill? or injectable? or liquid?

if its injectable we do almost everything under the skin, as its less painfull and causes less damage then doing in the muscle. but some antibiotics are better under the skin ((cant think of them know but surely bambina can say)...

possibly she cant get up cause too weak? or is there something else like maybe she has distemper which causes neurological damage? is she keepning in the soup, or is she still vomiting and diahrea? if not, then small amounts very often, and no real solid food for a day or so, just liquid and rice and small small bits of chicken. most animals can loose a lot of weight and survive provided they are hydrated properly. if she is just laying around all the time, make sure to change her position from side to side, or on all fours under her, like a dog would lay looking at u.

what is her (his?) temperature? use a rectal thermometer like u would for a baby, take temp.

electrolyte solution is often a powder that u mix with water according to instructions on the bag or box and u can give by mouth. saline IV is just that, it is given under the skin or in the vein. NOT ORALLY. u can make up your own saline solution or perhaps elfe knows the ratios for dogs with a mixture of water, sugar, salt , and with goats we use also baking soda... it tastes vile but can work also.

chorephenic. is a broad spectrum antibiotic to cover many things . most vets would give a one off shot of antibiotics for 24 hour coverage and then depending ont he patient, an other injection (or places in IV given in the vein) or liquid or pills if the patient isnt vomiting.....sounds like the vet suspects parvo and that what u are getting is indeed the standard parvo treatment which is mostly TLC (tender loving care with fluids, rest and antibiotics as backup).

good luck

hi, aries just got your pm. thanx for the thanx :o)

glad doggy has made it thru.... good on u...

so although she's back to her glutton self, dont let her over eat yet as her digestive system is still sensitive. small easily digested meals for a few days and gradually add back her kibble. now u have to un spoil her from cooked food to dog food again.

and get her vaccinated two weeks or so from now when she is back in her weight and healthy again... , including rabies shots....

yes bina. we are feeding her small amounts but frequently. soft diet. she's not really my favorite dog but moments like that make you realize she is a precious one after all. the antibiotics was to be taken orally...stupid me. i was able to force feed it. am keeping your tips altho i hope i never get to use them again. she's been vaccinated with anti-rabies but not anything else :-(

so here's for all of you, dog lovers out there! http://duggmirror.com/pets_animals/Click_i...screenclean.swf this is cute!
