Tourism association urges controls on foreign film crews

KRABI: -- The Krabi Tourism Association today called on local officials to ensure strict controls on Hollywood movie crews coming to shoot in the province, saying that previous movie shoots had damaged the local environment.

Mr. Itthirit Kinglek, association president, and other local tourism industry players made their statement this morning at Khao Kanap Nam, one of the province’s most important historical sites.

Locals had complained that Hollywood film crews had made irreparable environmental changes to the site, a fact confirmed this morning by Mr. Itthirit, who described the damage as ‘extremely distressing’.

Calling on local authorities to slap urgent control measures on foreign film crews before they damaged other local sites, he said that the publicity for the province provided by foreign films being shot there was not an excuse for allowing movie crews to destroy the environment.

Krabi Province became the scene of international protests in 1998 when scenes from the movie ‘The Beach’ were shot there, allegedly causing environmental degradation.

Permission for filming must be obtained from the Tourism Authority of Thailand and that has been the case for many, many years.

Bloody Hollywood...destroys a new country every day. Who are they going to shuffle the blame onto next? Surely not the fishermen patrolling in and around Krabi. Or the makeshift guesthouses popping up like the plague.

The crew added rootless tress to flesh out one of the areas they were shooting at. The locals liked the way the trees looked and asked the crew to leave them there, of course they couldn't stay in the ground without roots, so the crew removed them.. Pictures were taken .. enter international press .. instant scandal..

Even if it had been true the responsibility would lie with the Thai production company who oversees everything and not the foreign film crew.

Interesting that the article makes no mention of why the folks in Krabi came out with this statement at this particular junction. I imagine it's because Hallmark Entertainment is filming Jules Verne's Mysterious Island in Krabi right now.

I always thought it was ironic that locals in Krabi as well as activists in Bangkok were up in arms about use of tiny Ao Maya on Ko Phi-Phi Leh as a location for The Beach, but never organised any protests against the massive onging encroachment of national parklands by private interests (mostly local) on neighbouring Ko Phi-Phi Don or at Hat Noppharat Thara on the Krabi mainland.

Not to mention the long-time daily practice of coral anchoring at Ao Maya and other parts of Ko Phi-Phi Leh, along with the persistent dumping of rubbish on parklands in all three areas of Hat Noppharat Thara Ko Phi-Phi National Marine Park.

It's always the 'Beach' film they are complaining about. But what about the other films shot in Krabi: 'Mortal Kombat', a film version of the Playstation game. There were never any complaints about that were there, or what about the other film, that was shot in Maya Bay, years before the beach, I can't remember its name, but was a film about pirates, and had a whole armarda of ships sailing into tiny Maya bay, with cannons firing. Again there was never any complaint about that film. In a recent interview, Director Danny Boyle, said he went back to Maya Bay in 2002, and went to see if they really had ruined the place, of which they hadn't, and while he was there, the Thai Govt even returned the $100,000 deposit to him, that he was made to leave in the event of them ruining anything.

Directors really are the last ones to know what is going on .. They are kept well protected from negative information. It is possible to this day he doesn't know the real reason for the false environmental disaster claims. Next time you read one of these articles replace "caused serious damage to the environment" to "unknowingly offended a Government official/Mafioso" and you will be closer to the real story.

Protests of locals are in these cases mostly orchestrated. The method is used at many places.

The idea is that money has to be paid to silence the protest (to stop the protesters getting paid to protest).

There is no relation with environmental issues.

Krabi authorities to press more charges against movie crew

KRABI: -- A village headman in Thailand's southern province of Krabi yesterday threatened to press for more charges against a foreign film crew which locals have accused of causing extensive damage to a pristine environmental area.

Mr. Suthichai Namuang, a headman from tambon Klong Prasong and the president of a local conservation organization, said that he had gone to the site of the film shooting at Khao Kanap Nam to find workers for the film crew pulling up trees at the mouth of the cave.

The area in question, one of the province's major tourism destinations, is already at the centre of an encroachment dispute.

Mr. Suthichai said that he would inform the Krabi police that the film crew were continuing work on the site despite an earlier ban from the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment.

Action was also threatened by Mr. Abdulkoni Rotket, president of the Klong Prasong tambon administrative organization, who warned that arrest warrants would be issued if the people responsible for the film failed to show up to meet local officials.

Mr. Abdulkoni said that while the film crew had received a license to shoot the movie from the government, the license stated clearly that no trees were to be cut, or any action taken to change the local landscape.
