I don't know if I was a victim of incompetence or a bank scam today,

but I am mad as hel_l.

I take my US ATM/Debit card to the machine in front of my bank which

I will not mention by name [ BB ;-) ] and insert it. I ask for 15000 baht

and punch it in. The machine then says take your money and coughs.

The money is half in and half out of the machine. I reach in to take it

and only 9000 baht is there. The machine is jammed. No receipt comes

out to verify the transaction either. I hit the cancel buttom and thank goodness

my card comes out, but again no receipt. The machine then declares

itself out of order.

Ahhh lucky this is not after hours when I usually come after work.

So I go in to the bank and tell them what happened. A lady comes out and

opens the ATM machine and resets it so customers can continue banking.

But she does nothing about my missing 6000 baht. They then tell me we

must call the Call Center. OK

After about 4 tries we finally get thru, but then get disconnected.

I am fed up at this point and ask for the manager.

I wait for 20 minutes for her to appear.

She then eventually has us call the Call Center again.

The woman at the center tells me that since I was not using a card

of this bank, that she can not help me. I am to call my bank in the

US. Right. How are they to know anything about my shortage ?

The bank manager, a pleasant woman who has no clue how to solve

this problem for an injured customer of 6 years meekly says ..

"I'm sorry"

Time to change banks ?

Call your US bank again (don't call the individual branch, call the main customer service). They should be able to put a stop on the transaction. Could take a few weeks before you see your money, but you should get it back.

Make sure you keep the story really simple "I went to ATM and it only gave me half my money".

This happened to a friend of mine at the end of the year although in this case no appearance of money but receipt seemed to

state that the money had come off the account. Luckily as I hope happens in your case no money was deducted but a

worrying month until bank statement received which probably could have been avoided if churchill's advice was available

at the time.

What you experienced was the Thai bank employee syndrome, this will normally start with "my pen rai", "Please call head office", "Our manager is very busy, please wait" "contact your bank", "parden me are you upset?" You have to tell them the best and correct way to solve the problem (get your money) If they can open the atm they can verify that machine jammed, and amount paid at that time. You can do a internet review of your account activity to see what was charged against your account. This should be able to be done right there at bank with manager, and any shortage taken care of then. This is one of the reasons I like to use atm machine at a open bank, they can open machine to retrieve card or handle jams etc, right then.

:o Some months ago I withdrew from a Siam Commercial ATM in my street, Soi Sribumphen. Withdrew 10 000 baht, nothing came out so retrieved the card, then did the same exercise and out came 10 000 baht.

Checked my internet banking statement, and it said I had withdrawn 20 000, how so?

Rang Australian bank and after nearly 3 months received a letter stating that there was no inaccuracy from Siam Commercial Bank..end of story, so I lose 330 AUD just like that...no recourse, nothing, ti nada, zilch

Happened in CM many years previously and finally the correct amount was returned to my account... :D Dukkha
