I am hoping to meet Expats living in North Central Isaan around the first week or two of August 2008. What I'm calling "North Central Isaan" would encompass the area from Udon to Loei and Chiang Khan to Nong Khai. Our family's village is just outside of Nong Bua Lamphu.

I'm especially interested in seeing what kinds of homes you have -- don't worry, you won't have to lock-up the silverware. I hope to build within the next five years, but have not settled on a design. My criteria -- don't tell my wife -- is functionality trumping just about anything else. Cost is also a major consideration.

So, if you're up for meeting another falang who will be retiring in your part of the world, I'd very much appreciate any help you could give me; even if it was just showing me pictures of your home and sharing some basic data. I lurk a lot at ThaiVisa and am up-to-date on the building information posted. Most of what I've seen is beyond my price range, I believe, although I'm still up-in-the-air about including a pool with the house... :o

If u find your self down in the Buriram area, please stop and see our home. PM me for number and directions.

Likewise. I can show you a range of houses from 300,000 bht up to 10 mil bht. I am sure you could get some good ideas from them.

I also remember reading about a book, or was it a cd, available from some government office. That had a heap of plans in it. I am sure someone else withh enlighten you there.

Building up this way can be fun. As long as you do your homework :o

We just finished our home in a village some 40 kilometers west of Nong Bua Lamphu. I will not be there until the end of August, if then, but I can provide you the details of how to get to our house when you are ready to go.

My wife might be there then and she would be happy to show you around. If she is not there, she can call her parents and they will show you around. Our place cost around 2.2 million fully kitted out.

Send me a PM when you are ready to go and I will respond.

Do you play golf?

Not trying to be smart here, but, where are the stairs for your house?

Your house looks great but just curious where the stairs are located.

Lite Beer:

I agree that legendary surfer's family home would have the stairs inside.

I am wondering about dauu's home, pictured below Legendary Surfer's house in his (dauu's) original post.

Not a big deal, just curious.

Edit in: Check post #8, bottom picture.

My guess was a rope but the wife spotted the top of the stairs behind the bush.

yes we have stairs

Last picture had an upside down umbrella on the roof. Something weird going on. Maybe a 'Pee ba' involved.

Lite Beer:

I will bow to your wife's superior wisdom and x-ray vision.

I still can't see it through the greenery but the new pictures posted by dauu are proof positive. :o

Now I can't find the upside down umbrella. Is all of this a plot against me?

Interesting about the stairs. When we renovated the family house in 2002, somehow the 2nd story stairs ended-up being placed inside the house; ostensibly for security and convenience for Khun May. My wife now insists that when we build our own home, that the stairs go on the outside, leading to an initial veranda, like what the family house originally had. This greatly facilitates visitation and still keeps some privacy to the interior of the house. Any thoughts as to which is better? :o

My house is single story so I don't have any stairs.

My thoughts on a Thai house would be to have the stairs inside, or, like dauu's, completely covered by the house. This protects them from the vagaries of the weather. Wooden stairs can become rather slick and dangerous when wet.
